We got an Amazon Fire thingy and pick up a few things, some with subscription others not. I’m still confused.

What does this do? I have heard of this being used with something called Kodi.

Roku is probably the easiest electronics you will ever install assuming you have wifi.
You might want to consider adding a multi channel router so you don’t have computers on same network as Roku.

best thing to do is subscribe to netflix, and also maybe amazon prime for a while.
