Almost makes me want to watch Xanadu again. Almost. What an amazingly bad movie.

I never really “got” ELO.

I guess they were just a unique sound.

Saw ELO in the 70s. Loved that group. They said they were going to pick up where the Beatles left off. That was their aim.

One of my favorites, Mr. Blue Sky

Ahhh. That makes sense!

Problem is, I think the Beatles took "The Beatles" about as far as that concept could go. I think they mined the entire vein, and then some.

Still, I can't blame anyone for thinking they could take it farther.

They were one of a kind. Their music has stood the test of time as you constantly hear it used in advertising, etc. Sorta unappreciated in their era, but will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame this year. I would certainly rank them among the best bands ever.

I guess I have to agree.

They were, in a way, kind of a "specialty band," meaning that they inspired strong loyalty among a relatively small number of fans.

Other bands of that type might have been Yes, and (although it hurts me to say it) Steely Dan.

Unique sound, high quality (both musically and technically), but not mass market acts in the same way as Michael Jackson or Led Zeppelin.

I have the feeling that Donald Fagin would disagree strenuously.

Well, no, I take that back.

He would shrug and say "whatever," or not say anything and just walk away.

One thing that's clear after a few minutes' research on Google: the movie Xanadu was a flop that hurt many people, including the members of ELO. ONJ is lucky to have escaped with her career not in tatters, although (as ELO drummer Bev Bevan was quoted as saying) "Well, I don’t think it did a great deal of good." It was a flop among flops.

Which is a little sad to me, because I always thought the ONJ songs "Magic" and "Suddenly," both from the movie, were quite good, and I like them both to this day.

Here's more than you probably ever wanted to know about Xanadu in a website: The Xanadu Story.

That pic looks like that was when Jeff was still with “The Move”

Here’s a goodie. Jeff back with “The Move” doing the original version of California Man.

What’s funny is that when this song came out, they had started ELO as a side-project, it never was meant to be their main band.

ELO liked I think the sound of Sgt Pepper. Those sort of orchestrations.

Anyway, and in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make ;)

Anyway, and in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Or, to put it in engineering terms,

L = 0
where L is "Love," expressed as a scalar field.

I liked this group! I never bought any of their music, but I listened to it when I was driving. Does that count? :)
