Former Democratic U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said on Sunday in one of his first major speeches since leaving office this year that he would have liked to have been the U.S. president who ended cancer as we know it.

Biden, whose son Beau died from brain cancer in 2015, delivered an emotional speech at the South by Southwest technology summit in Austin, Texas, about continuing the work he led under former Democratic President Barack Obama in the so-called “Cancer Moonshot,” an initiative aimed at speeding up research into new cancer therapies.

He spoke of the need for prevention, research collaboration and big data to battle cancer.

Biden did not mention U.S. Republican President Donald Trump by name, but said in the speech before several thousand people he was willing to work with the current administration on the fight against cancer, which kills an estimated 600,000 Americans a year. “The only bipartisan thing left in America is the fight against cancer,” he said. …

Cancer is one of those things which we all would like to see a cure for. Sort of an easy target but not so easy to kill.

A lot of my family has died from cancer including my Mother. She did lived to 86 but had a clear mind right to the end.

I recently was diagnosed with a melanoma on the back of my neck. The surgeon got it early so a good prognosis but even the good prognosis was a little scary. He also removed so much skin that I have nice 10 inch scar to show off.

People keep talking about curing for cancer, it’s quite unusual.

Something must be afoot.

Just about every time I get a double post, I know immediately that I did it. This one tho, just slipped up on me. I don’t think I hit post twice. Pretty sure I did not.

About the only “Cancer Moonshot” I would expect from Ol’ Joe has something to do with a prostate exam.

Biden can’t resist always moving the conversation around to his dead son, so he can exploit his death and garner sympathy. My sympathies lie with all the little girls Biden gave chest massages to during public ceremonies.

Sorry Joe... Nixon already lays claim to that accolade... He brought cancer to the forefront and many of the cures and medicines that exist today are a result of the funding he secured for cancer research during his presidency and on into the future... He also brought about closer relations with China that laid the ground work for Ronnie to win the cold war during the 1980s.... Hey Joe... At least you got to be the VP of the worst President ever, Obama, who bested Carter when it came to appeasing the enemies of the United States.

Did you know that Biden gives his phone number to some of the girls?

I have it on real good authority that he carries two cell phones with him at all times.

One for his wife and the other for all his girlfriends.

That’s not the President’s job.

The USSR may have been defeated, but the Cold War kept on going thanks to Red China and the liberal streak of presidents after Reagan left office.

I think he should be the first person to land on Mars. They should know by now that his brain does not use oxygen so it should be easy to ship him out.

My mother often says that very thing, and she’s been saying it for decades. (She’s a conservative Catholic from Ireland, in her 70s; vehemently anti-abortion.)

If Biden has really wanted to end “cancer”, he should have started with the one that is the Democrat Party and then worked his way up the biological chain.

I’m sorry to burst Joe’s bubble but wherever there is human life there will be cancer.

I am not optimistic that there will ever be a “cure” like an infection can be cured with antibiotics. Cancer is a complex set of diseases and the more we learn the harder it is to imagine a “cure”.

Early detection is still our best chance because many cancers can be successfully “treated” in their early stages and with luck and the grace of God they will not recur. Once it gets established successful treatment is more difficult by several orders of magnitude and often impossible.

It sucks but that’s the way it is. “No one here gets out alive.”
