Matt Drudge has a link to Free Republic. Most of his website links are to news sites. See the list.
Matt must link to Free Republic to highlight the exchange of opinions? Did he post here in the past? Anyone know how long he has linked?
I might add another item that I seem to recall. The original link on Drudge that said “Whitewater” stood for a long time in the 90s. Poster “Clinton’s a Liar” (Cal) was on Rush one day and mentioned it in late 97 or early 98 and that is how I first started lurking.
At some point after Lesse Jackson was seen “counseling” Clinton for his affair after it had finally all came out, Drudge posted a teaser about a big expose of Jesse Jackson.
There was a thread on FR speculating about this teaser. Some enterprising poster took advantage of knowing (from just observing) what the url link might be on Drudge that had not yet posted the actual link. We pulled up the story and started talking about Jesse Jackson’s LOVE CHILD from the article.
A NY Post story is here:

Matt got really mad and contacted Jim. Jim was embarrassed and rightly so — it was almost as if some of our posters had “hacked” Matts site. There was no actual hacking but Matt’s relationship with the journalist where he acquired the head’s up to the story was damaged because he had promised not to post his story until after the papers came out the next morning. What Matt had done was had his story ready and waiting on his server with no link posted for people to get to it.
One of our enterprising posters just guessed the wording & spelling of the link and once you entered it on a browser, voila, there it was. I know because I was on the tread. Shortly after this blow up, Matt took down the “Whitewater” link and for about four years it was gone.
In my recollection it was not the same triggering event that got Lucianne mad enough to leave.

Only hourly???? Slacker! :=)
You are correct, I remember the incident well and we ,FR, was the first due to eyes in California I believe. I was just thinking of that incident when I read your post
I don’t remember that part . CAL was on Rush the week or so before the March for Justice (Halloween 1998).
I remember Matt was a bit upset about the un-moderated nature that made it difficult to police when StormFront would come by for a visit. We had weekly Jew-bashing threads that had to get taken down.
The Bush-bashing prior to GW getting the nomination was another issue. After Bush took office, we went a bit more mainstream.
Quintanna?
And yet, bottom line, he was still a better choice than Gore or Kerry.
My first contact with Free Republic came when Sean Hannity mentioned it on his radio program and I typed it into the search box. I first went Drudge from here.
Me too!
I discovered Free Republic because of a link on the Drudge page. Then one day I sensed some conflict and the link was gone. For me the effect of discovering the Free Republic website was huge.
I had attended an event called "March for Justice - 1998" for taking pictures. I met several people, Larry Klayman, Ann Coulter, and Gary Aldrich among them.
I wrote a summary of what I observed and posted it on Free Republic. I dont recall exactly who but someone was kind enough to format my summary to the required HTML format. Later someone contacted me for the pictures, which were my negatives, and I found someone at my Brother-in Laws print shop that scanned the prints and returned jpg files. I sent the files somewhere, a Newspaper in the Southwest, with permission to publish them.
I later learned to use Photobucket to make pictures available to more people. In fact, one of my favorite pictures is a still there.
Constitution at March for Justice
As I reflect on the events, I realize that was nearly twenty years ago. Drudge, Free Republic, and I are still going the same direction.
Suffice it to say I feel more comfortable knowing that Free Republic and Drudge are not in conflict. They are like men and women, not equal but complementary.
Quidam is but a FR keyword, now.

Back to the future? Matt was around eight years old during the Watergate scandal.
That automatic refresh thing drives me nuts.
I went the reverse route. I fist found Free Republic in 2004 via a link from a biker forum I hung at. Saw people talking about Lucianne, so I checked it out. I liked FR better, so I settled in here.
The very old timers were correct the first time. I was a clueless newcomer.
