Matt Drudge has a link to Free Republic. Most of his website links are to news sites. See the list.
Matt must link to Free Republic to highlight the exchange of opinions? Did he post here in the past? Anyone know how long he has linked?
I misspoke. I joined in 1999.
I do. Every day. Matt does what good editors should do and don't select among all the news what is genuinely interesting or genuinely important. I find that at least 80% of Matt's linked news articles are very interesting and informative if not important stories to know what is going on in the world.
No one else comes close to that hit rate.
If not for Drudge, I may never have found FR, but I did, in 1998.
Ha looking back at that Salon article it’s fair to say that JimRob had good instincts about GWB and was right about the Bushes at least in regards to how deeply their interests ran in nearly all sectors of government.
I think I found freerepublic by doing a search on conservative forums. I lurked for a month or two and registered my account on April 23, 1998. I do remember I actually found drudge AFTER I found freerepublic so drudge was never much of an attraction for me.
His linking to us dates from about mid 1998 or so very very early.
it was a couple times, maybe 10 times, taken down temporarily, usually when someone used the n-word.
A freeper reminder that Matt Drudge has been in person at two different freerepublic National events:
he never threw around his weight and he stayed on the margins, sort of embarrassed to be a celebrity.
Drudge has more class and integrity in one pinky fingertip than the entire MSM.
Yes, I meant the so-called attacks on George W. Bush by folks on FR. Those seem more valid every day.

Yes, agreed.
I thought at the time Bush was better than the other options. Still do, but never a groupie.
Sites like FR bring in the passionate ones.
Oh yes, the mystic Quidam. As I recall, he predicted 9-11 two years before it happened. Anyone know where he went?
I remember you, HG. That is how I found Free Republic in the glory days. I was trying to remember the handle for our spy in the white house...started with a Q.
I am consistently 3-7 days ahead of the local uber-conservative blabber mouths because of my Freeper addiction.
Protest Warrior was at San Diego Naval Hospital rallying against Code Pink and a Gal with a Cardboard cutout of
Arnold Swartznegger told me about
FREEREPUBLIC.
The Legend Continues.
Years ago, I made a remark uniquely connected to a breaking news event. Pretty good comment if I say so.
Rush must have thought so too. He repeated that remark less than an hour later on his show.
Uncredited of course.

Yes. I have had a couple of items on Rush’s show, or so it seemed. I am always glad to see it when it happens. Rush is a great asset to us, a way to get the information and analysis out there.
I remember when Matt really gained some notoriety and was expanding his setup there was talk of him having spyware, tracking software or something like that. I stopped going there and have never been back.
I'm sure by today's standards it is nothing to be concerned about, if it ever was, but I've gotten used to not visiting his site.
This was in the early days of Web marketing, and this sounded incredible.
I have long since let my Billmyers subscription lapse, but I really found a home at FR. This place has been great!
And, yes, you do read the news here before you find it anywhere else!
CA....
I first discovered Drudge and Free Republic by way of the Rush Limbaugh show...and I was so grateful; it was like manna from heaven. Really and truly.
But there was a short time back in the 90’s when Drudge dropped the FR link and added Lucianne’s.
The matter was eventually cleared up...iirc it was about quoting intellectual property and I apologize in advance if I was wrong.
Talk show staff and members of Congress staff members used to go through FR and pick out articles for their boss. (I don't know if they still do)
One time I posted a bit of info (actually an opinion) and three hours later I heard a talk show host read what I wrote on his show. Sorta blew my mind.
FR is like a river where we throw our thoughts, ideas and articles into it and we have no idea who will read it.
This is all designed to keep us from getting the big head.
Where he went...
a question that's
left to right but not in between...
