McDonald's has a traffic problem and its executives know it. Now they have a plan they think will turn it around.

The company lost more than 500 million customers to close competitors since 2012, Chris Kempczinski, McDonald's USA President told investors gathered in Chicago Wednesday.

Exactly. Quit with this crap.

Market to all families. Bring back the Hamburgler. Don't try to be a hipster cafe. Deep fry those fries and apple pies in real beef tallow like you used to. Quit trying to be healthy - you're McDonalds for #$@$ sake!

They should franchise McTrucks.

Burger trucks.

The owners can figure out where to park them, or what neighborhoods to patrol with them.

Just like Taco Trucks and Ice Cream trucks.

I am not arguing the merits or not of the upscale burgers they have tried, I am stating they ALWAYS fail... because you are trying to get a demographic that is NEVER going to come to McD’s... or at least not in big numbers

If I want an upscale burger, I am not going to McD’s.... Nor is anyone else, by and large.

Quality has suffered over the years, but as others have pointed out, the service has gone to crap in most stores relatively speaking. Some are well run, but many have staff that couldn’t care, and are just flat out ignorant to customers etc.... Part of that has to do with the talent pool they are recruiting from, but much of it has to do with they let them get away with it.

There are some very well run McD stores out there, and surprisingly some of them are in far more ethnic/urban neighborhoods than you would expect. I have found that honestly, the stores in the more urban/lower socioeconomic areas, actually tend to offer a better experience than than those in more blue collar neighborhoods...

Seems there is a line, that there is a band of socioeconomics when between the very low and the very high, that the service tends to fall apart

Three generations were taken to McDonald's as kids: Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials. Baby Boomers and older Generation X parents took their Millennial kids to McDonald's. Millennials have not returned, and the Baby Boomers and Generation X, more or less out of the parenting of kids business, do not like what McDonald's currently provides.

If I were upper management at McDonald's, this is what I would do:

* Serve 100% beef, real cheese, and unadulterated buns in my hamburgers. No additives or mystery items in the breakfast sandwiches.
* Drop the salads. Jason's Deli and dozens of other places do them better. Maybe keep the fruit cups.
* Cook fries, chicken nuggets, etc., in beef tallow. The hydrogenated soybean oil is a fossil from the "all fat is bad" era of the 1980s and 90s.
* Return to strict inspections from headquarters to assure cleanliness. Remove franchise rights from repeat offenders.
* Drop the smoothies, iced coffee, etc. Starbucks and other places do these better. Stick with coffee, iced tea (in the South), and soft drinks. Maybe bottled water.
*Get rid of the specialty sandwiches, except for the chicken sandwiches. Maybe fish fillets in heavily Catholic areas during Lent.

Yep.

WBill Jr, when asked about fast food, will choose Chick-Fil-A every time. Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner, it doesn't matter. I'm not sure that he even knows about McD's, beyond seeing a commercial occasionally.

Fine by me. Food tastes better, service is better, restaurants are cleaner, and the help actually wants to help, they're always professional, if not downright pleasant to deal with.

A little bit more expensive? Sure. But I don't need to worry about a side of salmonella with my sandwich, or get panhandled by homeless people out in their parking lot. ChickFila is a great place to eat, always.

Yeah, remember when Ray Kroc though he was being clever when he asked the MBA class he was visiting what business McD’s was in, and when they said “fast food” he smugly corrected them— “We’re in the real estate business. McDonalds is the largest owner of commercial property in the world!”

Wrong. It really is all about the so-called “hamburgers”.

They remodeled a McDonalds close to me a few years back.

If you landed here from Mars and saw it you’d have no idea that McDonalds sold hamburgers.

From the décor you’d think it was some sort of fresh farmers’ market that sold upscale coffees.

Yeah McDs have dumbed down the menu for the customers which to me say they are catering to the poor and illiterate. On most drive in menus and recently even in the McD’s the menu will not list pri ces on the burger themselves just a Meal option #2 or #7 etcetc. I asked about the Grand Mac and they asked if I want the meal I said no, and then they said te price was $4.69 and I said, “I don’t want the meal price” then they said that was JUST for the price of the burger and I almost died laughing. I said no thanks, give me a Mc Pick 2 for 2 double Cheeseburgers for $3.00 and got the hell out there.

“If your McDonalds looks like a coffee shop, that’s half your problem.”

CHACHING!!

McDonalds has a HUGE identity problem. They are trying to be all things to all people.

Hardees went through that several years ago. They had bought Carl’s Jr, some chicken outfit and another smaller burger joint.
Their menu was bloated with all the items from all their acquisitions.

I think this was about the time Puzder came along.
They slashed the menu, identified the consumers they wanted to target and introduced the Thickburger with the advertising to attract the targeted consumers.
Burger history was made.

I was hauling meat from the meat patch and often delivered to contract producers, the places that make the burgers for all the burger chains.
There was one smaller plant that I spoke with the manager quite often.
One day he mentioned that every chain was wanting smaller beef patties at cheaper cost except ONE that wanted a larger patty of higher quality.
He couldn’t tell me who but a month later the thickburger hit the market.

charge $5 per table. I’ll pay to avoid the underclasses.

I overcome that problem by eating my burgers at the Airport Marriott or PF Chang’s if the other half insists on a date at that Chinoisse fakery.

They don’t get it. McDonald’s used to have good food — hot, tasty, burgers and the fries were out of this world for a low price. Now the meat is gray and flavorless, the rolls are styrofoam, the fries are politically correct, tasteless something, and a meal costs close to $10. People react with their wallets.

Keep your stores incredibly clean, simplify your menu(it’s unreadable) and have people who smile and take an interest in helping customers.

They are not in the transaction business, they are in a relationship business and should treat each customer as a guest of their house and show them a good time in the buying experience.
