My cats do that all the time. Never have understood why they blow their cover.

Chittering at prey is a very common cat behavior. It shows that they are simultaneously excited by the prey and frustrated that they can’t get to it. My cats chitter when they sit on their window perch and see birds or squirrels on the lawn.

Have heard that it is used to either anchor the birds(like making an interesting noise before whacking a delicious bambi),or, it presents a non threatening sound coming out of a very threatening set of teeth and claws while approaching that tasty avian.

Whatever they are trying to do, it is one of the most amusing feline behaviors.

It’s the same as Buck fever in a cat.
Truth. (ok, my opinion, my truth)

Cats try to charm birds by acting and sounding like hungry chicks.
I've seen that in my own cats, even though they had no training from a mama cat.
Including my adorable but somewhat dim cat who tries to charm leaves blowing around outside.

Our last two cats would "chatter" when they saw birds or squirrels outside that they wanted to get at, but couldn't.

We called it "the sound of frustration."

A coulpe of our cats chatter at birds. They are not mumbling, it is a high pitched chittering sound.

Our little queen will get on her hind legs and paw at the glass in her lust to get at the birds.

When your cat looks at you and starts “chittering”, be afraid, be very afraid.

Ha... My cat would do that. It sounded like 'meow meow, meow' in a guttural growl, as he looked out the window at a bird.

Once the Vet told me the cat had a disease from eating too many chipmunks and I should stop that from happening. I gave him a long dumb look and said OK. That was why I kept that crazy cat.

So I prayed for the cat and he kept killing them pests right on and didn't get sick again.

My cat always does that when looking at birds either in the house or outside. It’s a normal thing they do.

Your cat is trying to be diplomatic. Diplomacy is the art of saying “nice birdie” until you pounce and bite.

I believe that cat is saying “Ohh yeah baby, just a little closer” -or- “Ohh you are so lucking I am in here”
