Meryl Streep is defending herself after Chanels designer Karl Lagerfeld claimed that she dropped out of wearing a Chanel dress to this years Oscars in favor of a brand that would pay her.
In reference to Mr. Lagerfelds statement, there is no controversy: Karl Lagerfeld, a prominent designer, defamed me, my stylist, and the illustrious designer whose dress I chose to wear, in an important industry publication, Streep said in a statement to PEOPLE. That publication printed this defamation, unchecked. Subsequently, the story was picked up globally, and continues, globally, to overwhelm my appearance at the Oscars, on the occasion of my record breaking 20th nomination, and to eclipse this honor in the eyes of the media, my colleagues and the audience.
I do not take this lightly, and Mr. Lagerfelds generic statement of regret for this controversy was not an apology. He lied, they printed the lie, and I am still waiting, she said.
(snip)
Earlier this week, Lagerfeld told WWD that Streep eschewed a Chanel dress for Sundays award show in favor of a designer who would allegedly pay her.
I made a sketch, and we started to make the dress, Lagerfeld told WWD. He claimed that shortly after production started on the gown, Streeps camp reportedly canceled in favor of a label that offered a pay out. Dont continue the dress. We found somebody who will pay us, Lagerfeld claimed the actresss team told him.

Dowager Queen, frumpy looking strange hair look.
Subsequently, the story was picked up globally, and continues, globally, to overwhelm my appearance at the Oscars, on the occasion of my record breaking 20th nomination, and to eclipse this honor in the eyes of the media, my colleagues and the audience....
narcissistic ###t
Who paid her to wear the dress? I couldn’t find it in the article.
How true. Great Reckonings can be a powerful life extender.
Just one more and then I'll go - wait, there's another one....
Amazing.
So, Streep is saying we should’t believe the lying media?
Given how fat and dowdy she looked, I would have paid her NOT to wear my design.
Nobody worships and adores Hollywood more than Hollywood themselves...LOL
Streep lies for a living. I don’t believe her.
She has no waistline. You can’t wear a belt in public like that when you have no waist. Of course, she’s always worn terrible clothes. And whatever happened to her famous mane of hair? It’s looks thin!
Streep is the Aryan from Darien.
Elie Saab
The guy who is holding Streep’s hand has something wrapped around his ankle. An ankle bracelet?
i think the dress was from Elie Saab. she apparently tripped on it on the way in. not sure it was that flattering, frankly. after that she didn’t win. bad night for La Streep. or karma ??!! would love to see the Chanel she reneged on.
overwhelm my appearance at the Oscars !!!!!!!
This wasn’t said in jest!!!!!!!
I could see my 13 year old niece saying this but I’d tell her life isn’t always fair. Get used to it.
But a grown woman?!?!!
Hollywood is where the new kings and queens are. Queens in multiple ways
True.
And she looks like she's wearing a medical device around her shoulders.
Here's a clue, Meryl. After a certain age, the term "overexposure" has real meaning.
STREEP’s reputation has taken a change, from being one actress with talent, class and smarts to a dowdy over weight crabby old woman without enough brains to know when to shut her mouth. I don’t think many missed it. Her age of Hollywood queen is over.
Only scene I liked in Kramer vs Kramer was his naked girlfriend accidentally meeting the son. Movie would have ended better with the girlfriend marrying the father.
Streep gets more obnoxious by the day.
Let me get this straight: It is OK for Meryl to LIE, spewing her hatred toward President Trump and we are supposed to bow to her freedom of speech. And throws another temper tantrum because the media published something that was not true about her? Like it is so important what gown she wore?
You said it.
