Ladies and gents, i think I've lucked out. Every year at this time when my tax return comes in I treat myself to a new firearm. Last year it was a snubby revolver. This year I found myself a Chinese SKS in pristine condition. The bore is spotless. The stock is clear and unmarked, the weapon functions flawlessly. I did some net research and it seems to have been made for the Chinese PLA, circa 1975. Just a really nice piece. But then I noticed something. With every other com-bloc weapon I've ever bought the importer has either laser etched or roll stamped the company info on the weapon. This one has no import markings anywhere. NONE. And I took it apart for cleaning and inspection and I still couldn't find any. Is it possile this is a bringback? It seems too nice for that but the lack of any import markings makes me wonder. I'll continue to research it but at this point it's a bit of a mystery.
It’s something I get ‘cause I’m lazy about managing my deductions.

Could also have been a “walk across” from Canada. Before the 1990s the border was once almost wide-open, and lots of firearms (both legal here, and not so much) came through in American vehicles.
Also, back in the day, State Department, Foreign Service, and other government personnel returning from overseas were not subjected to a detailed search of their belongings, and some who had bought weapons for personal protection in their foreign posts (not necessarily legal here) brought them back into the US.
As an example, both of the above situations have been cited as means by which “G series” FN-FALs not on the “ATF amnesty approved” list (a story in its own right) have appeared over here.
It could be a canadian walk across. On clear days I can see Canada from the end of my street.

I was in a local gun store when a guy walked in with one of those FN’s. He had inherited it from his Uncle and had no idea what it was. Story ended badly. The guy next to him at the counter was the local ATF book checker, he called the enforcement guys and off the gun went to their private collect - or so I am told - along with threats of prosecution. God I hate the ATF.
You found the personal weapon of one of those female PLO officers that work at the front of Chinese restaurants screaming at her underlings and waiting for the go signal from higher ups. She’s gonna get busted down to working in a massage parlor.
I bouht the gun for $100 from a guy who needed cash to pay his taxes. He threw in a half box of “cartuchos.”
I must be getting OLD.....
I sort of remember if one got a couple hundred back in taxes you were sort of very lucky...It was recommended to come as close to zero as possible and I do believe one of the reasons was Why let the govt hold that money then give it back to you? You are basically giving them an interest free loan every month..
OF course I also remember (barely) of biting my toenails and now I can barely clip them.
