Girl power! Mysterious ancient human society was run by a 'female elite' and lived in sprawling stone mansions

...

The bodies were placed in sequential tombs over a 330 year period and spanned multiple generations.

The finds reveal that a high degree of social differentiation and societal complexity existed in Chaco by the early 9th century.

'All societies are complex, but here we see a society with larger populations living in villages and cities and where major differences in status and wealth are evident,' Professor Kennett told MailOnline.

...

The Chacoans, one of North America’s earliest complex societies, lived in massive, multi-storied masonry buildings, known as 'great houses'.

Pueblo Bonito is the largest of these great houses with over 800 rooms.

The Chacoans occupied the structure between AD 828 and 1126.

One hundred and eleven pottery jars have been found in Pueblo Bonito's sprawl of public and ceremonial rooms.

The great house also contains elaborate burial chambers including 'Room 33' used by the Pennsylvania team for their research.

Room 33 was a chamber used to bury a high-status member of the Chacoan community and their descendants.

The team found multiple bodies in the chamber which they genetically analysed, finding that for 330 years power was passed from female to female.

...

The canyon contains large-scale public and ceremonial buildings with intricate architecture, suggesting that the culture thrived as a complex society a thousand years ago.

Using masonry techniques unique for their time, the Chacoan constructed many 'Great Houses' with multiple stories containing hundreds of rooms.

The buildings were planned from the start, in contrast to the usual practices of adding rooms to existing structures as needed.

Constructions on some of these buildings spanned decades and even centuries.

What’s a woman? Can you define the term?

How do we know those bodies were from women running the area elitely, and not just the usual sacrificial victims? but in this culture, those women were specifically set up in ceremonies as bait for wandering Karen demons so they could be trapped and then buried?

I mean, Occamz’s Razor.

Women actually managing to run something successfully
or
Karen demons.

Yeah, after Star Trek Roddenberry tried an entire series based on the concept, but set on post-apocalyptic Earth.

Yep. Most civilization seem to have female rulers right before they’re conquered or collapse internally.

America is a matriachy. But our female voters haven't voted for a woman president yet.

With no written records from people, they make inferences for what many things meant, socially, back then, using what we think certain things mean today; but they are totally guessing on MANY things - like matriarchy, but don’t really have facts, just their inferences.

That's the best anthropologists can do when there are no written records, and the society is long extinct.

I wonder what the US will be like 330 years after giving women the right to vote.

On the current trajectory, The United States will not exist and historians will debate the stupidity of the people who passed the 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th amendments ... and the greater stupidity of the people who only managed to repeal 18.

“That’s the best anthropologists can do when there are no written records, and the society is long extinct.”

When inferences are the “best” they can do, lacking written language records contemporaneous to the remains found, it is academic arrogance to “report” them as “knowledge”. If they admitted their own arrogant hubris, they’d admit “we really don’t know what these things mean”.

Instead they teach those being “educated”, using only their inferences as facts, which they are not.

There is totally knowing wrong intellectually to just say “we really don’t know”.
