Pueblo Bonito is the largest of these great houses with over 800 rooms.
The Chacoans occupied the structure between AD 828 and 1126.
One hundred and eleven pottery jars have been found in Pueblo Bonito's sprawl of public and ceremonial rooms.
The great house also contains elaborate burial chambers including 'Room 33' used by the Pennsylvania team for their research.
Room 33 was a chamber used to bury a high-status member of the Chacoan community and their descendants.
The team found multiple bodies in the chamber which they genetically analysed, finding that for 330 years power was passed from female to female.

The canyon contains large-scale public and ceremonial buildings with intricate architecture, suggesting that the culture thrived as a complex society a thousand years ago.
Using masonry techniques unique for their time, the Chacoan constructed many 'Great Houses' with multiple stories containing hundreds of rooms.
The buildings were planned from the start, in contrast to the usual practices of adding rooms to existing structures as needed.
Constructions on some of these buildings spanned decades and even centuries.

It is an unfortunate commentary on both the uncertainties they suffered and the immoralities they indulged as exiles as they became increasingly atheistic (despite their superficial adherence to tradition).

Spare me the indignation: I took Hebrew class with a room full of Jews; they were all the above except for the teacher herself. I, the Gentile, and the teacher, an Israeli, were the only ones who knew anything about the Bible, and the only ones who did not subscribe to a vulgar and hedonistic lifestyle. Most of them had lived in a commune (kibbutz), and many of them were promiscuous.

With no written records from people, they make inferences for what many things meant, socially, back then, using what we think certain things mean today; but they are totally guessing on MANY things - like matriarchy, but don’t really have facts, just their inferences.
A ‘female elite’ for the administration of a society doesn’t surprise me. The men would likely have been busy hunting and gathering, or farming to keep folks in groceries!
