Indeed they were. I saw them for the first time in the late 70's in Houston and the last time in 1998. They played an outdoor amphitheatre in west Austin. In August. It was 105 degrees when they started playing. The show was one for the ages, and they performed before a crowd of less than 2000 (about the capacity of the venue). Alan Parsons opened for them.
Heard this on the radio last night. The “classic rock” station then played Mott The Hoople’s “All the Young Dudes.” Wonderful old tune!
Sometimes you get crazy gigs.
In 1993, I sat onstage, perched atop Buck Dharma’s Marshall stack, taking photos when BOC played a local WV roadhouse.
Prior to that, I’d only had nosebleed seats for them at the Cap Center.
Rock is a fickle mistress.
All the handicap spaces are overflowing at Alice concerts.
:D
Don’t feel pregnant: I got the King Crimson album and never “got” them either, but Wetton’s solo album a few years ago is very good.
Wetton also played with Roxy Music.
How’s this for a tour? I saw Yes open for Black Sabbath. We were dumbfounded by how good Yes was (Howe and orig drummer) and walked out of Black Sabbath after about e songs they were so mediocre.
That’s a show I would have loved to have seen!!
Bar none-—and I saw them all-—Hendrix & Vanilla Fudge. Jimi just past his prime of 1 year earlier, Fudge most amazing musicians I ever saw.
Then I moved to Austin in '83 for college and no real big rock acts come here often (I remember the Dead were here in the fall of '83 and Pink Floyd stopped for a show in '89). Most of the music here these days is coming from the over-commercialized festivals the city and the promoters makes millions from the hipster douchebags on(ACL, SXSW, etc...). Greed has absolutely ruined the live music scene here, IMO.
Sounds like he died "In the Dead of Night."
Howe looks like a goblin from Harry Potter.
In a good way.
I'm really looking forward to that. As I told a new acquaintance last year, a musician who has worked with Bill Bruford, Yes is keeping me alive, in a way.
Most of my playlists start with the live version of Siberian Khatru, and the song gets my walks off to a great start. Regular exercise is a key component of controlling diabetes, and I favor walks of 4-6 miles.
There are Rush songs in there, too, of course. I just hope Alex actually speaks in syllables during the induction speech, though his remarks when Rush was inducted were a hoot!
...And Uriah Heep, as well as some later work with Ken Hensley long after Hensley left Heep, and "UK" (around 1979-80, I believe) as well...
From Wetton's website:
The very last studio song of John Wettons career was the closing track on the most recent and indeed final ASIA album Gravitas and included the profound lyrics
Think the best of me, till we meet again.
RIP.
That is true, liked larks tongue in aspic but like the 1st ones better..in the wake of poseidon, in the court of the krimson king, Lizard, Islands..personally
I understand that Neil won’t be there - I think he’s afraid that Alex will embarrass him! I thought Alex’s “blah” speech was not much different than his guitar playing. Telling a story without any words.
Maybe his induction speech will be: “YES! Yes, yes, yes. Yes....yes.yes....yes....” (I doubt it. It is one thing to be goofy with your own speech.)
I never knew that...thanks. I came to appreciate Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music in the late 70s. I was stationed in Germany at the time, and a friend of mine let me know of a televised concert on German TV. He recorded it, and the concert featured 3 bands: Roxy Music, Dire Straits, and Talking Heads. The cassette is in my garage somewhere, along with 8 boxes of cassettes that I mixed on my own.
I'd also listen to Radio Luxembourg during the afternoons, really kept me abreast of the Euro music market.
