I just got a new Panasonic cordless phone and initiated Verizon's Home Phone service, which allows you to get their wireless service but use it to power your (comfortable) cordless phone. For that, you need a doohickey called a MiFi router which you connect to the phone via a cable. My model of MiFi also allows me to add a cable for my fax machine and will run that, too.
I have been reading up on EMF radiation from cell phones and wireless devices and have some concern, because my Maine Coon Bijou likes to lay on her perch next to me, which is about 18" away from my cordless phone base and MiFI router, and about 3' from my cable modem/WiFi.
Do any FReepers have expertise in EMF or other electronic emissions, and could you tell me if there is a "safe" distance Bijou could be from these devices? As many of you know, I lost my beloved kitty Kefira back in March from bone marrow cancer, and I want to make sure that my wireless devices do not bring about such a horror for my present cherished kitties.
Thanks for any expert input.
Thank you for actual facts. I don’t worry about EMF exposure on our dog, but my kids have been around it since they were babies.
Every once in awhile I wonder if I should be concerned, but have to push that thought away because what could I possibly do to limit their exposure?
Anyway, it’s a relief to have read your post.
Sure it will (the technical term for that is "cooking"), but you need a lot more RF at microwave frequences than a wi-fi router can put out. If it raises your tissue temperature by a 1/30th of a degree F., you're right; that's not going to have any physiological effect. A mild fever is far hotter.
Pets have routers?
How else would they know where to "go"?
Ha!
The energy of a photon is proportional to frequency. Gamma-ray frequencies are 10^10 higher than microwave frequencies (that's one, followed by 10 zeroes!). Microwave frequencies correspond to rotational frequencies of molecules, which means that all they can do is heat molecules up if they happen to have the right frequency (that's how a microwave oven works).
Gamma ray photons have energies sufficient to break and rearrange chemical bonds in random and harmful ways. They can shake-and-bake DNA, which can cause cells to die or become cancerous, etc.
Americans have to be the dumbest upright critters on this earth.
You mean I should get a new one?
Examples of non-ionizing EM radiation include radio ( RF ) waves, extremely low frequency ( ELF ) fields, infrared ( IR ), visible light, and UV. These forms of EM energy are generally not dangerous, with some exceptions: high-energy radio microwaves and IR which can cause destructive heating of biological tissue; intense visible light which can cause blindness; and intense UV which can cause blindness and superficial skin burns in high doses over a short period of time, and skin cancer and cataracts of the eye at lower doses over long periods of time.
You and others can either listen to the engineers on this thread or take my advice above about Faraday suits and bedrock bunkers. If not within your budget, Reynolds still makes tin foil. Have nice day and remember to smell the flowers while they're still there. Photons are your friend.
Not even remotely funny. If you want to act like an a_____e, please go somewhere else.
One unknown side effect of too much RF is a diminished sense of humor.....stay away from your microwave one year!
Thx ...
There have been documented cases of animal cruelty where people put small dogs or cats into microwaves. In some cases, it was a naive old lady who didn't realize the harm and was only trying to dry off her wet dog. In another case, it was a vicious black teenage girl who bragged about putting a tiny kitten into a microwave on purpose to kill it. The agony that these animals had to have gone through is no laughing matter at all. There is nothing wrong with my sense of humor, but there seems to be something wrong with your callousness.
Are you sure? Have you checked your back recently for a new toe growing?
The frequency of microwave ovens and Wifi are often the same. Only the energy density is different. So, it’s very similar.
Lol! My point was to run the 100 wifi routers on electricity. Yeah, I know the electric bill would go up. Still, was my math correct? I think I shorted by a 1000 fold. What say you? My office router is about 75 degrees by feel.
Love engineers who have built the world, unlike theoretical physicists who spend their day on white boards thinking they have the Universe figured out. String Theory is defunct; dark matter and dark energy are still a math problem they can't work out - all speculation. Engineers build stuff.
I can’t see my wireless router when I’m nuking my stoeffers for lunch. Frequencies can be shared.
Doncha love it? I do.
someone has too much time on their hands...
Killing me. I thought of that also when I first heard the hypothesis. Also thought...what?...no meows or sounds from the box? Soft kitty, warm kitty, little bag of fur...dead.
