A HOLE IN THE SUN'S ATMOSPHERE:
Spaceweather.com ^ | Jan. 31, 2017

Posted on 01/31/2017 4:02:36 AM PST by tired&retired

A large, canyon-shaped hole has opened in the sun's atmosphere, and it is spewing a stream of solar wind directly toward Earth. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory photographed the structure, which stretches more than halfway across the face of the sun:(see pic below)

This is a "coronal hole" (CH)--a region where the sun's magnetic field opens up and allows solar wind to escape. NASA's STEREO spacecraft recently sampled the stream flowing from this hole and the velocity was unusually high: nearly 750 km/s. Such a fast-moving stream will likely spark Arctic auroras when it arrives on Feb. 1st.

Could you imagine if a storm this size were just off the coast of New York City. The tidal surge would create havoc.

Well I hope your goal is never fulfilled. The last time the Northern Lights were seen in Texas was probably the Carrington event which allowed people in Cuba to see the “Northern” Lights.

Today while a Carrington event would be interesting, perhaps beautiful and light up the night with enough light to read a news paper in it, it could be disastrous to many electrical/electronic devices.

I suggest you take a cruise to Alaska and hope we don't have the opportunity to see the Northern light here in the South.

A FReeper commented once that they saw the Northern Lights from New York’s Central Park.

I’ll probably never make it to the arctic circle, which is kinda sad.

Give me convenience, or give me death!

Yep - some way-over-the-horizon transmissions.

Not a Ham myself but a good friend loves this sort of opportunity to talk with folks - he has am impressive list of countries/cities he has reached over the decades.

So are we all gonna die again, or what? Yawn.

Maybe not, but FR might be going down again!
