Explanation was given. But you must have missed it.
No explanation? I saw several. Maybe Jim should have personally pinged you?
Multiple reload requests can't be helping the workload much.
YMMV.
Have loved you since time immemorial, BBEB, but...EXPLANATION..?
You make it sound like Jim should be chilling our salad forks, sorta.
Eh...contingency planning is GREAT but...let’s sorta keep it all in perspective.
When it first went down I googled it, and there were even people screaming stuff like, “WHAT ARE WE PAYING FOR...?!”
What is the % of free-loaders here, maybe 98%..? I’m mostly including myself, there, and I’m not proud of that.
Again, contingency planning is fine, but....let’s tread really, REALLLY lightly here, shall we..?
It was disappointing, as a paying member, to see FR down for the whole weekend. Incredible. Wasn’t it also down on or around the election? Where is disaster recover and rollover? I can understand being down for a few minutes or hours, but days?
All this information is available on a very special website. Freerepublic.com.
Is good to know to read tovarich.
I would agree to this.
Absolutely. Freerepublic 2.0.
Like the first, but more powerful, sleeker, and faster. Maybe even interactive, in some way.
But I like the current version, very much. More than I even realized.
That was a huge eye-opener for me, not to have FR for two full days.
It was like “what do I do to see what is happening”?
I had to go to actual news sites, many of which have entirely different viewpoints.
Well almost all of them have different viewpoints, in fact. Even Fox (although they seem to be much improved now)
I am very, very, very glad we have FR.
Bigtime. Good job Thompson and crew.
I am just very thankful that the site is back up. If the site owner wants share what happened that is his business.
From FR on FB, posted on 1/21:
Great News! Heard from John a little while ago. He has the server physically running. He’s going to backup the data and run integrity tests before putting it online, We could be up and running very soon if everything checks out, Sorry, no clues to why it crashed. Nothing unusual in the logs. It’s one of our newer servers, but this is twice that it crashed “for no reason whatsoever” so it’s now destined to be replaced. Prayers up that all checks out and maybe we’ll be up soon.
It was a nuclear chain explosion at one of the main FR server farms. Literally thousands of Free Republic IT personnel were killed, but here you are whining that you didn’t see an explanation while there are orphans and widows out there who can’t even bury their loved ones?
I hear Jim had hired that one Russian to take care of the server...
The quarterly goals might seem like a lot but if everybody that regularly comes here kicked in $25 a quarter, we'd probably not only easily reach that amount but would likely have enough left over to build up infrastructure.
Jim Robinson's son (John) gave up his entire weekend to get things up and running for us. While it was a bit of a bummer not having the site available during most of Inauguration weekend, I appreciate the effort under trying circumstances and with limited funds.
It got explained.
I was disappointed to find the Yahoo alternate requires registration now.
Hate Facebook, but that was the only alternate I found.
I did a search and found the Facebook page where it was described as a hard server crash.
FR 2.0???
I sure DON’T want to hear: “Going Forward”
It's two words: Free Republic.
If you can't be bothered to type the name of this forum correctly, I can't be bothered to read the rest of your screed.
If more Freepers would become monthly donors as myself and sometimes I kick in a little extra Jim Rob could afford more redundancy in his equipment and avoid down times and give us faster speeds.
Jim Rob and family do a great job with this site. We do make a difference.
Wondered where everyone had gone...Read many insightful and exciting posts during those 2-days...Everything is good!
Well, I’m glad we’re back on line. I went to other sites for the Inauguration but I did miss the pithy commentary from you folks.
