The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Thanks for links.
Thanks for the link.
None of the links work.
If you just post the links without using HTML at all, they will work.
The minute you add HTML, you have to add HTML for everything.
Sometimes, unfortunately, there is HTML imbedded in the information and you can’t tell until it doesn’t work.
I found out today that Onalee’s is a Watchdog 30 company on the Dave’s Garden site which means “These are the 30 most highly rated companies in our entire database.”

We’ve had the run of below freezing days in Texas like everyone else has. It’s not too often when we have more than 3 days without a warming above freezing at some point but we had just that. My rain barrels have a 4” layer of ice on top.
I spent the past 4 days cooking and canning large batches of chili, spaghetti sauce and concentrated beef soup stock. Going to can pintos tomorrow even tho it is going to be warmer.
I’m still getting a lot of peppers from the plants in my sunroom and balcony. I had enough hot peppers for my chili to be plenty spicy and some sweet peppers for my spaghetti sauce. Getting about 1 tomato/week. The best gardening treasure this winter has been an amazing quantity of huge blooms on my rescued hibiscus. I got 2 plants that a nearby WalMart thought they’d killed last summer, nursed them back to health and they are rewarding me daily! I can’t figure out how to post pictures while freeping from my phone or I’d show them.
And, amazingly, its time for me to put down tomato and pepper seeds to be ready for spring! I really need to get busy with those!
This is what gets me thru the cold days in January and February. It may be freezing but at least we have a little more sunshine every day :)
You have been so busy. I have just been lazy as a dog. LOL
You just made me feel really lucky or blessed. We have 2 areas of our home that were formerly porches but were closed in with some thin fiberboard and windows by a previous owner. Since the enclosed porches aren't insulated they aren't taxed. We discovered this our 3rd year in the house. Our annual appraisal district notice went up about 30%, hubby went into the tax office to find out why and the flyover appraisal went by square footage under the roof. When they saw it was basically screened-in porches on steroids they reduced the taxes based on the sq ft in the insulated part of the home.
I sometimes wonder what they'd do if they knew I have a fold-out bed in my sunroom for sleeping on all the nice nights. LOL
Even with all your rain your garden still isn’t washing away! The frost is beautiful there :)
Thanks for those sources. In reading thru this thread the winter sowing has me fascinated. I hope to put down my pepper and tomato seeds this week. I’m going to read up on this and see if I should experiment with putting some outside too. I sell my excess seedlings at a yard sale in the spring but only raise as many as I bring up using the bottom heating space I had in my old greenhouse. If this outdoor method worked I might even get to increase my spring “mad money!”
I’m only busy because I’m trying to make up for the time I spent laid up last month. Ended up just sending 4 of our 5 kid’s families checks for Christmas. Since we weren’t sure until the week before Christmas if I was going to be able to travel the other kid family was up in the air till the last days before Christmas. We had Amazon deliver wrapped gifts at the last minute when I got up and around.
In the living room it looks crazy here. I’ve got a box with drapery fabric I was working on before I fell in the living room floor. On top the box are 3 gifts and wrapping paper I still need to wrap for ladies in my prayer group beside my seed containers I got out earlier this week so I can get the spring planting started. I’m in a time warp.
I’m ready for spring to be here.
Cold weather. Ugh...
Mega Dittos.
Was 3 below last night...but warmed up to zero at 8:00 AM...still having a hard time tilling ??? maybe I’ll have better luck tomorrow. /s
Tilling is hard when the ground is frozen. LOL
It was 80 degrees here today. Last week I nursed hubby thru 5 days of a nasty cold. Just when I got him back to work and was about to get my seed startin going, I got hit with the cold. I’m back at work tomorrow tho. Hope all is well with everyone else. Praying good health for you all.
Hoping for a quick recovery for you too.
