Anyone able to recommend a good address book, simple database-type program for Windows 7? Interested in free or reasonable cost (not $150 lol).

Names, addresses, phones, a few notes...that’s all.

LOL, MF, I never know when to take you seriously! I never heard of it-is that for real? I began using Filemaker back around 1987 I think...

From researching, looks like Handy Address Book should work fine. Thought maybe someone would know of something programmed to work with Excel.

I use EZ Address Book & love it - recommend it to anyone I know who is looking for a great address book (plus there are other features). I tried some free ones, but none anywhere near as good as this one. It’s $29.95 & worth every penny. You can install it on up to 3 of your computers. EZ Runs on Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and Windows 10 (32 and 64 bit systems). There is a free trial. The owner has been excellent about answering emails when I’ve had a question.

Here’s the link with info, screens, etc.:

I kid you not!

FileMaker began as an MS-DOS–based computer program named Nutshell - developed by Nashoba Systems of Concord, Massachusetts, in the early 1980s. Nutshell was distributed by Leading Edge, an electronics marketer that had recently started selling IBM PC-compatible computers.

I cannot vouch for open office db but it is free. I’m sure it won’t work like access. but before ms bought access it worked better.

Windows 7 made me love Windows OS less than I did before because they screwed me on Hold Anything, which now doesn’t work.

DOS isn't done until Lotus won't run...

I remember back in the day I could and did use Lotus 123 as a Data Base, Word Processor and a Spreadsheet...
Then Dbase 4
Then Enable (dot commands!)
Then everything went stupid (or I got stupid)

oh well

Check Gizmo’s website. Lots of freeware, virus-checked. It probably has something you can use.

Why not find the update, remove it, turn off updates and reinstall the program?

I have used an old Windows program called MyDatabase for years. I have partitioned my MacBook in order to keep using it.

I work with retailers and use it to build customer lists. First name, last, address, city, state, zip, phone... any term you want. It has a filter and sorting function. With the database, thr program can easily print letters, labels, envelopes, etc.

It will also allow building a simple spreadsheet program... for keeping track of customer sales, visits, etc.

It’s about $40 and can usually be found at Staples or you can download it from their site...

"I remember back in the day I could and did use Lotus 123 as a Data Base............."

Ahhh... Those were the days. I used Lotus long-long after Windows and Excel took over since Lotus would do things for plotting that Excel STILL can't do (like print a data label anywhere around a data point). I would get the data in Excel, convert it to Lotus 123, format the plots the way I needed them, then convert back to Excel. I even still have a Lotus program on my PC, though I don't use it any more. I use the Excel conversion.

I used a program called "Sidekick" for phone lists, back in the DOS days. It ran in background with a "hot key" to activate, and did everything I still need for phone directories. It even would dial the number. I would hit the hotkey, and start typing a name. When the typed letters uniquely identified the person (usually one or two letters) the number would pop up, and would dial with the return key. It cost $25, or so.

Unfortunately, it stopped working with Windows after the Windows 95 versions.

I’m do out of the loop I shouldn’t even have commented.

Made 50 bucks an hour 18 years ago programming Access for a music studio owner on the side.

Now I’m lucky I can download an app without screwing it up.

You can probably find a full freeware interface for address booking. No need for a db.

I LOVED working with Access (prefer the MS Office 2003 version).

Paradox for DOS was wonderful, but I’m not sure if that’s around any more.

Been using this little gem for years

Click Tray Calendar 2.58:

Review by: FreeShareware
It is a user-friendly calendar, address book, and reminder program that can be accessed quickly from the Windows system tray. You can create almost unlimited notes, enter repetitive tasks, create To Do lists, and set alarms. It also has a practical fiscal week or month picture display.
