What sense does it make to fire the head coach with only 1-3 weeks left in the season?
Unless things are really out of control, let ‘em finish the year and then axe ‘em on Black Monday.
Why wait? Doesn’t cost anything, coach contracts are guarantees. Also you can start talking to unemployed coaches the minute you fire the guy you’ve got. And now they can start looking for work. Once you’ve decided to fire them might as well do it.
It’s a timing thing to let the potential candidates know there is an opening to be had. Also if they want to give a lower level coach a tryout they can do the interim thing for a bit to see how they handle it. Just saying there are viable reasons for it to be done prior to the end of the season.

They get the jump on/dibs looking for/hiring the replacement.
