1.) “The idea that cavalry will be replaced by these iron coaches is absurd. It is little short of treasonous.” — Comment of Aide-de-camp to Field Marshal Haig, at tank demonstration, 1916

2.) “The Americans have need of the telephone, but we do not. We have plenty of messenger boys.” — Sir William Preece, Chief Engineer, British Post Office, 1878

3.) "This 'telephone' has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us." – Western Union internal memo, 1876

4.) "Reagan doesn't have that presidential look." – United Artists executive after rejecting Reagan as lead in the 1964 film The Best Man

5.) "Rail travel at high speed is not possible because passengers, unable to breathe, would die of asphyxia." – Dr. Dionysius Lardner, 1830

6.) "The world potential market for copying machines is 5000 at most.” — IBM, to the eventual founders of Xerox, saying the photocopier had no market large enough to justify production, 1959

7.) "I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." – Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM, 1943

Haha. I recently bought a color laserjet, and specifically looked for the ability to photocopy. On the other hand, I will probably never use the built-in fax feature, since I can just scan and send a pdf copy.

12.) "No one will pay good money to get from Berlin to Potsdam in one hour when he can ride his horse there in one day for free." – King William I of Prussia, on trains, 1864

My son and I just used one of the "budget" air carriers. Never again, we decided. Certain things are worth paying more for.

23.) "It'll be gone by June." – Variety Magazine on Rock n' Roll, 1955

They didn't specify a year, did they?

Sorry, didn’t mean to sound harsh, I intended it as constructive criticism. Remember, this is Free Republic, not CBS or the NYT. We have layers of fact checkers and editors. We have to get it right.

I used to live in Maynard. Ken Olson was not a visionary.

Taped phone call between Buddy Holly and Decca Records who didn’t want to release That’ll Be The Day (or anything else he’d recorded) and were dropping his contract but wanted to hold onto (suppress) those songs for 5 years (at which point they would’ve been out of date with the times).

He’s told that he could go anywhere because he was dropped but he couldn’t rerecord those songs and they refused to let him pay for the recording session to buy them back. They were too horrible to use but they might use them later...

He ended up releasing them for Brunswick which avoided the drawn out ownership battle since it was a subsidiary of Decca.

But until enough people had computers, there was no reason to create the software.

19.) "We don't like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out." – Decca Recording Company on declining to sign the Beatles, 1962

They were half right. The Beatles, circa 1962, were lousy. They did improve, however.

One thing I don't comprehend in this day and age (especially in light of Rathergate and the forged but 'signed' National Guard memos) is how a faxed "signed" document is acceptable release (whether it is truly faxed or sent as a pdf attachment).

These documents aren't accepted "as a proxy" while awaiting the hand signed document, they are the only document often received (by insurance companies, medical companies, employers, et al).

Truth be told, rock and roll IS gone from radio and you have to wonder why Variety these days prefers hip hop and disco divas.

Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" movie had major cities on both coasts under-water at this point!

Then of course there is the writing of Thomas Malthus on over-population--kookery of the first order.

Also, the "peak oil" crowd has some wild predictions on where we were supposed to be (freezing and starving) by now.

IBM wasn't the only company that lacked foresight. Kodak turned down the (eventual) Xerox founder as well.

There are definitely more secure ways to transmit a signed document.

In the government, we use the CAC card to sign documents. The CAC has a chip in it, and can only be accessed by the person who knows the PIN or the people who issue the CACs. As long as the document is emailed within the government system, it carries an electronic validation of the signature. I have run across a situation where the electronic signature had to contain a copy of my handwritten signature. It was a pain to scan the signature and insert a copy of it into the electronic signature, but now I can put my handwritten signature onto a document *and* have the electronic validation.

I think you meant to address that to Fresh Wind.

I can find decent music on the radio on occasion. I live in a hilly area where radio reception is spotty and it seems like only country/western stations have any signal strength. But by using Pandora, youtube, or iHeart radio, I can find anything from old to new.
