As Donald Trumps shock election victory reverberated around Silicon Valley late on Tuesday night, some high-profile technologists were already calling for California to secede from the United States.
The broader west coast is a stronghold for the Democrats, and significantly more politically progressive and racially diverse than large swathes of central US. California is also the biggest economy in the US and the sixth largest in the world with a gross state product of $2.496tn for 2015, according to the IMF.
The campaign for independence variously dubbed Calexit, Califrexit and Caleavefornia has been regarded as a fringe movement. But support was revitalized by influential Uber investor and Hyperloop co-founder Shervin Pishevar, in a series of tweets announcing his plans to fund a legitimate campaign for California to become its own nation posted even before the full results were in.

This is my idea:
If enough signatures get collected (several million), let’s do with California what Great Britain did with Ireland. Let each county vote on whether to leave, and those who want to leave can do so, but those who want to stay in the U.S. can also do so.
Remove California’s votes and Trump would have won the popular vote.
BYE!
Hillary can be your leader
I was born in San Francisco and my parents were born in Merced and Turlock.
So if California becomes its own country, am I still a natural born citizen of the United States?
California Uber Alles
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California
Uber Alles California
Zen fascists will control you
100% natural
You will jog for the master race
And always wear the happy face
Close your eyes, can’t happen here
Big Bro’ on white horse is near
The hippies won’t come back you say
Mellow out or you will pay
Mellow out or you will pay!
They’re going under anyway.
Quit talking and just do it already.
I like to watch old 50s and 60s era tv shows. Many of them are set in California. It seemed like a really nice place to live back then.
Now it seems to be a total mess.
fixed that :-)
Yes, in fact this was one of the goals of the 14th Amendment- to clarify that those born in the CSA during the Civil War had all the “privileges and immunities” of US citizens, unless they were involved in the insurrection.
These traitors along with the La Raza types will end up dead or in prison.
Can we question their patriotism?
Great song.
There are some clueless leftwing reactionaries here in Silicon Valley? How could I have missed it? Though most of my colleagues tend to be clueless progressives, the vast majority are not crazy enough to still be going on about the election...well at least not around me...
California has the richest land jam packed with more resources than most countries in the world.
Liberalism has destroyed one of the most blessed places on earth. What a crime.
242 would become the magic number to win the Electoral College. Trump was at 306 electors without CA, Hillary on the other hand won 177 if you remove CA (obviously ignoring faithless electors which can’t be predicted).
Strategically, California is very important to the US. Much like Ft. Sumpter. I’m trying to imagine a scenario whereby a bunch of anti-gun dope smoking libs try to take over for example Edwards AFB.
Please.
Do us a favor.
Enough techology exists outside that Godforsaken state for us to excel.
Great! As we drain the swamp, we’ll be sticking the hose right the San Francisco Bay and everyone can be all multicultural and progressive out on the coast. Until the Big One.
Look.. if “California” wants to leave I have no problem ....if... then let the state break up in to area that want to stay and want o leave
Virginia leaving the Union created West Virginia that wanted to stay...
Left-wingers in California need to acknowledge that it’s only in their small concentrated areas of LA and San Francisco that really want to leave that the vast majority of the states area does not...
The truth is California’s reflection of the same problem the whole US has...
In the US afew highly concentrated urban areas of the US ...LA, San Francisco Chicago New York City think they should be able to dictate policy for the rest of the US flyover country
And in California the same kind of the concentrated urban Coastal areas LA and San Francisco think the should dictate policy for California and run roughshod over California’s inland area. California’s version of flyover country
