I’m guessing fog, combined with too fast driving and slippery roads led to a famous pile up.

Early this morning I headed down to NYC on I-90 and I-84.When I got into Connecticut my GPS display was showing something like 4 hours to get to Greenwich from where I was gonna take Metro North into Manhattan.At that point I tuned to WCBS News Radio and they said that the entire Tri State region was a traffic nightmare thanks to dozens and dozens of accidents.
So I turned around.

Geez. Slow down, be aware of weather and road conditions. Stay safe. I am about an hour south, It was crappy this morning. I left thirty minutes earlier then normal, and glad I did. Icey conditions were in the forecast so was not surprised to see it. I took my time and had no trouble. I did see a tractor trailer off in a ditch, and the occasional knucklehead driving 10 mph with their flashers on, but all in all not to bad.

It was 15 degrees yesterday, and below freezing for several days, when freezing rain started after midnight, and continues even now. Expected to not reach above freezing until after noon. All trees are glistening in a coating of ice. The fact that it is the first weather event of the season makes it still worse, as there is no residual salt on the road from prior events.

That tanker truck looked it was moving pretty fast before it hit the side rail, flipped over it onto the road below, and burst into flames.
Amazing this guy got that shot live. Video already has over 4M views. Like a scene out of a movie.

Mixed precipitation of rain and frozen rain hitting cold ground, and in this case elevated freeway. My wife tried to leave for an early errand and took a tumble on the steps. She came back inside and went to bed.

Do the people at cBS ever even glance at the story before writing the headline? The head line says 40 vehicle, the body, in the first paragraph says 55 vehicles. Well, which is it? 40 or 55?
