It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. No snow here yet-I can wait on that! Cold is here and worse than we have had at this time of the year for a while, but no worse than when I was a kid.
Sorry to hear about your accident! Especially going into the Christmas Holiday.
We have a new Border Collie. She is a little over 7-months old and as exuberant as heck. She has taken to playing with a plywood and fabric cat scratcher, flipping it around. Unfortunately, she nailed me with it right on my recent surgery site, where I had a bunionectomy done in June. My foot had been bothering me for a couple of days, so I called the podiatrist and went in yesterday afternoon. Sure enough, there was a brake on that toe, so I am in a boot for the next six-weeks! Bummer.
I am trying to figure out how I will be clearing snow snow, cleaning the coop and doing dump runs. Yeah, I know...very carefully!
I hope your MRI is clear and you are back on your feet, quickly!

I’m envious of your new pet border collie.
We visited a Christmas tree farm near Lebanon, MO last week and cut our tree, with the help of a very friendly border collie. We’ve owned dogs over the year but never one of these.

Do you get the notices of sales via email ?
Do you check out the prepper notes at the bottom of the email notices, generally there are two such prepper articles in each email.
I actually email the significant prepper articles to myself for storage purposes, and the emails come daily, with sales offers of sometimes 65% on selected items.
The one from yesterday :12/16/16 "What kind of wheat" to store?(gluten content varies in wheat(Hard red/hard white/soft white) and various uses (bread/ pastry/sprouts,etc.).
12/12/16- "Don't Forget Your Emergency Kit for Winter Travel" (What to pack, snackbars, water, space blanket, first aid, jumper cables, etc.)
The prepper articles seem to be seasonal adjusted.
The only thing I haven't seen on sale is the selection of long term storage of vegetable seeds (canned and sealed,25 years storage).
I got a note from a friend who lives near Tamworth, stating the Mt Washington Observatory hit -85 below zero, wind chill, Thursday nite.
I think it may be the right time to break out the snow thrower.
Incidentally, how did the bees do this year ?

I like a good, meaty and juicy tomato that is reliable, with emphasis on the 'meaty' !
We’re getting freezing rain at 1:45 pm today. Too slick to walk up hill to get the mail.
Supposed to be back to 40-45 F on Monday. We’ll live.
Problems reported with freezing rain in the Ohio River valley, and comming this way.
It sounds like really slick conditions coming to me in Western NY
Supposed to get to mid-40's with rain and fog during the overnight, followed a return to freezing weather return for tomorrow.
My main concern , up north, is freezing rain will take down overhanging tree limbs and cut power while online.
Since I don't have battery back-up, it looks like an early night to go to bed tonight.
The last I heard, this front is running almost due Eastward, affecting the NYS Southern Tier, and into New England.
The blessing is that you can slide into your home and be safe and warm.
BOOOOOOOOO. Yep, it’s all smurry out right now. I need to top off the hens food and water before it gets slippery. We are well provisioned and don’t really need to go anywhere until Monday, so will be staying in. Probably get the fire lit.
Here in west Michigan we got another 5” of snow to add to the foot that was already on the ground. Out dirt road has not been plowed yet so no Saturday evening Mass for us. Will have to see how tomorrow looks. It’s bitterly cold here. The birds are eating like crazy. Plus we do suet cakes. We usually go through 20 or so each winter, have already put out 8. Our freezer ad pantry are well stocked, made a pot of white turkey chili yesterday and plenty left for today. Nothing growing here obviously although I have 3 flower spikes on an older orchid plant.
We watched It’s a Wonderful Life last night. It never gets old.
It’s 28 degrees here in Massachusetts. We had five inches of snow last night and this morning and then some rain.
Mr. T made chili this morning. I heard the coyotes last night with our neighbor’s mastiffs responding.
A pot of last spring’s hyacinths is blooming.
I’ll be ordering seeds in January. Mostly lettuces, basil, cilantro, squash, peppers and cherry tomatoes. In late April or May I’ll order transplants of heirloom tomatoes. I think I’ll be getting Brandywine and Big Rainbow this year.
Have you or others tried indoor growining in water with a growing light? I am really curious if it really pays to do.
This year I ran across a new variety of winter squash, well, new to me : Delicata Winter Squash.

Higher in Nutrition than Butternut and more versitile (roast, baked, soup, microwave, steamed, etc,) also called sweet potato squash ( french fries (?))
When steamed until tender, the outer rind is edible and softened :
And if you run a roadside stand, regular winter squash here run $.99 per pound , whereas the Delicata commands $1.75 each
The texture is smooth and not grainy, nor tough like either an acorn squash or butternut; size wize, they are the size of an optimum Zucchini.
And the seeds can be eaten like pumpkin seeds, and the fruit texture is smoother than pumpkin.
Apparently the squash are available at Traders Joe's, and Whole Foods.
(P.S. : Since they are heirloom, isolate, and save the seeds.)
