An Illinois man who was one of the better-known atheists in the country and an activist for keeping religious and government affairs separate died in a plane crash last week, officials said Monday.
The McHenry County coroner said an autopsy Monday revealed that Robert I. Sherman, 63, of Poplar Grove, died from multiple crash injuries. Authorities said Sherman was piloting a small plane that crashed into a cornfield either Friday night or Saturday morning. The crash is under investigation.
Sherman was an outspoken atheist and critic of using state money for religious purposes and having religious displays in public spaces. He also hosted a radio show and ran for public office several times.

That is what I thought. Would God hear my appeal and change his mind? Not likely.
I’ll bet my lunch money his last words were “Oh My God...”
Of course there’s no way to ever know this for certain, but when the plane was going down, and he realized what was about to happen, I’ll bet he cried out to God to save him.
My thought too - I hate it when some rejoice over the death of un-redeemed souls. If God wants as many as possible to come to Him, so should we.
More proof that God does indeed have a sense of humor.
I’ve read that “buying the farm” originated during WWII when all the GIs carried life insurance policies.
When a soldier was killed, his family was paid. Many families used the money to pay off the mortgage on the family farm.
More likely, only a fleeting half-second to begin saying “Oh sh...”
Not likely he could ever pray anything. To any One.
well, now they know!
Guess he is a believer now..... God have mercy on him please.
And here someone focuses on the true tragedy of this event.
Apparently, God was not his co-pilot.(with apologies to Col. Scott)
Here’s the explanation I read about, probably in one of Richard Bach’s books.
US slang, from the WWII era (first printed record in the US Air Force in the 1950’s). Similar expressions like buy the plot and buy the lot also existed, although buy the farm is the only one to have survived. When a military pilot with a stricken airplane attempted to crash land in a farmer’s field, he would destroy a portion of the farmer’s crops for which the US government paid reimbursement to the farmer. If it were a bad crash-landing destroying most of the crops then the crash would cause the buying of the whole farm, shortened subsequently to the current idiom.

That’s great. Thanks for sharing!
****...that crashed into a cornfield***
Oh reminds me of a TWILIGHT ZONE episode.
Ill bet my lunch money his last words were Oh My God...
Being an atheist, who believed nothing superior than himself, it was probably “OH MY ME!”
They should hang his plane wreckage up there- nose up.
Did he have any connection to the Clintoniacs?
He has a son, hopefully his son will see the light and not embitter so many folks. It’d be awesome if he bought some paint and fixed what his Dad did.
Well, he was a Democrat until 2008, so that’s not outside the realm of possibility.
He was affiliated with Madalyn Murray O’Hair in the early 80s, himself becoming the director of the IL chapter of American Atheists.
Theres no need for faith if you were to die and be greeted by Jesus offering you a choice.
You didnt believe when you were alive. Do you believe now?
Well, of course!
Do you want to go to Heaven or Hell?
Heaven sounds good!
