1993 NAFTA signed into law

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is signed into law by President Bill Clinton. Clinton said he hoped the agreement would encourage other nations to work toward a broader world-trade pact.

NAFTA, a trade pact between the United States, Canada, and Mexico, eliminated virtually all tariffs and trade restrictions between the three nations. The passage of NAFTA was one of Clinton’s first major victories as the first Democratic president in 12 years–though the movement for free trade in North America had begun as a Republican initiative.

And a whole bunch of companies headed south to Mexico. The ink was hardly dry on the treaty before Nintendo up and left Renton, Wa to head there. About two hundred people lost their jobs practically overnight.

Anybody else remember, at the time, Clinton sent Al Gore out to debate Ross Perot about the effects of NAFTA? I remember the media celebrated a great victory by Gore in that debate; that he really out Ross Perot in his place and all that.

Yup and Perot said this about NAFTA. “We agree to that thing and all we will hear is a giant sucking sound going south.”

And he was right.

2008....Both Hillary and Obama talked about withdrawing or re-negotiating NAFTA. See my previous post.

I remember that whole thing. Perot’s “giant sucking sound” and Rush’s “jobs Americans won’t do anymore.”

What a terrible bit that whole thing was.
