Former Vice President Al Gore touted Ivanka Trump's commitment to a climate policy "that makes sense" Monday night after meeting with President-elect Donald Trump and his daughter.
It's no secret that Ivanka Trump is very committed to having a climate policy that makes sense for our country and for our world and that was certainly evident in the conversation that I had with her," Gore told Chris Hayes on MSNBC's "All In." "I appreciate the fact that she is very concerned about this."
Gore stressed that he preferred to "not give too many details" about the meeting but called it a "very intelligent exchange."
Ivanka Trump has singled out environmental regulation as her primary policy focus as an incoming first daughter, despite her father's past claims that climate change is a hoax propagated by China. Reince Priebus, the incoming White House chief of staff, in recent days said Trump's "default position" on the topic was that most of it is a bunch of bunk.
Gore described both meetings earlier Monday as "very productive" and "extremely interesting," according to pool reports.
"I had a lengthy and very productive session with the president-elect, Gore told reporters. It was a sincere search for areas of common ground. I had a meeting beforehand with Ivanka Trump. The bulk of the time was with the president-elect, Donald Trump. I found it an extremely interesting conversation, and to be continued, and I'm just going to leave it at that.
Despite Gore's endorsement of Ivanka Trump, the president-elect continues to consider Cabinet candidates that have views that run counter to the former vice president's.
Among Trump's top contenders to head the Department of Energy is Oklahoma oilman and Continental Resources CEO Harold Hamm, who was a leading voice on energy policy in the Trump camp during the presidential campaign. Venture capitalist Robert Grady is seen as another potential energy secretary pick.
Trump has considered Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson for secretary of state.
it would have been much much better had trump met with Marc Morana from climate depot- and with James Inhoffe- and with ‘man-caused climate change skeptical scientists’
It is not less dangerous because it is so politically attractive, I understand that 70% of America supports the carrier deal. It is brilliant politically and perhaps should be welcomed as a measure which will improve Trump's standing even before he takes office and removes his deficit in the negatives column.
I would add one thought, and that is that when we seek to "ameliorate the dislocations caused by globalism and trade deals that put us at a disadvantage" we must inevitably sacrifice the interests of some other sector of our economy. The campaign was run and we for the most part here in this forum are still thinking in terms of reforming our trade posture as a free lunch.
Inevitably, one sector will be harmed as another sector is advantaged.
In today's world it appears that, despite the views of many in this forum, we can prosper only if we engage in world trade. That means that we must consider the impact of our trade deals not just on individual sectors of the economy, some of whom will be harmed, but on the whole of society. In other words, we are forced by technology and the state of the world today to engage in modern-day mercantilism. We must do that or we fall behind financially and militarily. Yet to do so threatens capitalism and threatens liberty and inevitably threatens some sectors of the economy.
My plea is that we do this constitutionally, transparently, and in good faith. That is an awful lot to ask of any set of politicians but at least we here on Free Republic should be free to point out the upside and downside on these questions without being accused of treachery.
But I think not. Once facts are known supporting this hypothesis though, ones criticism are too easily dismissed by the devoutly faithful. Bide your time or be marginalized as a Cruz-bot by the intellectually lazy.
The fact is Trump’s “adoring fans” fought to defeat Hillary Criminal and her SCOTUS. Sadly, the same can not be said of sore loser “true conservative” Cruzers who have, outside of a couple weeks before election day, been tantruming nonstop since Trump wiped the floor with Saint Ted in the primaries. BTW, if you are looking for “intellectual laziness” I suggest you look in the mirror, FRiend.
Al Gore = Madoff
When I contacted them, I learned that they ship to Texas. The transaction was seamless, as we both have PayPal accounts. I bought a mixed case of Spatlese and Auslese, and my total cost including shipping was $200, or about 40% of retail in the US.
I hope there's no tariffs added to the cost of German wine. In case you, or anyone out there is interested, PM me and I'll send you the website.
The winery's been a family run business for over 500 years. His father was a great host, and I'd spend 2-3 hours on every visit. I've opened up a few bottles already, and the memories are as superb as the wine.
I'm not "sacrificing the interests" of the American wine industry, as I've been a member of a local Texas winery for nearly 3 years, and my "official" hobby is wine and viticulture. I'm looking forward to travels to wineries here and abroad upon my retirement (if I ever get there).
I can understand what Trump did, for now. Taxes still need to have those cuts implemented. Then, God willing, he will stop doing this.
Even if tariffs are ultimately deemed necessary, I would like to see a general tariff of no more than 10 percent. (1) We have about 20,000 different tariffs on various things, and this would simply the tariff schedule greatly. (2) Lots of small businesses use foreign inputs, and it would be a shame if their taxes were reduced, but their inputs became significantly more expensive.
“Did you even vote for Trump?”
Do I infer from that “logic” that only those who are Trump’s supporters are eligible to critique him? By that standard FR should have been pretty much mute when it came to Obamao.
It will be up to his supporters to hold Trump’s feet to the fire whenever he strays from that which is good, unless of course his supporters will deny he ever strays from the path of political righteousness. From what I see recently on FR the latter is far more prevalent than the former.
As do I. IMO, he’ll be relying on the bully pulpit of his office, more so than Obama. It will be a busy 4 years, maybe more.
Don't the FR Cruzer Eeyores get tiresome? :)
You almost owed me a new keyboard. :)
nathanbedford has a long and storied FR history as a die-hard Cruzer. He deserves every slap he gets over his drama-queen pearl-clutching. ;-)
Private reply to come
Your analogy sucks. Conservatives are supposed to oppose liberals before and after they get into office. Rational conservatives don't help liberals like Hillary win elections by sitting out. You have no credibility as a conservative if you didn't vote for Trump.
Good to see there’s another alumni from the class of ‘98 still posting.
Which part of “I hope Trump will govern as his acolytes promise me he will” do you not understand?
Does not matter if she is or isn’t
She isn’t president
I am convinced that Cruz Butt-hurt Syndrome is incurable.
“I am convinced that Cruz Butt-hurt Syndrome is incurable.”
Not just incurable. It apparently also causes a sort of derangement in those affected. Sad, really.
