Sorry to hear this. I remember this guy. I’m pretty I sure him more than once practicing at the Exposition Park pool next to the Coliseum in Los Angeles.

My father knew him at Franklin, my grandfather did iron work all over the LA Olympic site; dad gave me a full summary of Sammy Lee's feats the first time he took me to see the pool after touring the museums.
He was obviously proud of Lee and would have confirmed your recollections.
