Between February and March 2016, Australian and French sailors in the Arabian Sea seized small ships — or dhows — smuggling weapons, most likely to militants in Somalia and Yemen. These caches aboard the dhows included examples of one particularly rare firearm, the North Korean Type 73 machine gun. In November 2016, independent monitoring group Conflict Armament Research released a report detailing the captured weapons and their likely points of origins and destinations. According to the analysis, the shipments showed links between Iran and armed groups Tehran supports in the Gulf of Aden region.

If you enjoy military history, interesting to see all sorts of weapons re-appear on the various battlefields in the Middle Wast. Iran purchased North Korean weapons to fight Iraq and now are emptying the warehouses to supply their proxies.

With the mag on top reminds me of the Jap machine guns from WWII I’ve seen in some of the news reels of that war.

If you are referring to the French designed Hotchkiss those were fed by clips on the side; a horrible design feature. The magazine fed Type 73 reminds one of the excellent Bren light machine gun used by the Brits.

Looks like a mix of three great guns: PKM, Bren, and Zb.26

The Nambu Light Machine gun.

They were very highly thought of by the American GIs.

Lt.Col. John George wrote about them extensively in “Shots Fired in Anger”.

Dhows look really nice under sail but I will bet their bilges really stink.

I missed the caliber of the ammo used by this weapon in the articles. 7.62X54mmr according to Wiki and the ammo is not interchangeable with the assault rifles. This appears to be a significant drawback for the utility of the weapon.

Yes, the Nambu.

On a separate subject, my dad had a Nambu semi auto handgun that had a “trigger” plate on the side of the weapon. One could fire the firearm with their finger outside the trigger guard like while handing it off if captured. I think it was a 7MM.

Definately unique to NK. Probably 7.62x54mm.

RPK turned upside down

You meant PMK (see above). RPK is on a milled AK receiver:

Of course it won’t fit the AKM assault rifle. The 54r is a battle rifle cartridge like the 7.62 NATO. An assault rifle uses an intermediate cartridge by definition like the 7.62x39mm or 5.56x45mm. The Mosin, SVD, and PSL do use the 54r. The PKM machine gun does too.

Just like the AK47, the RPK receiver went to folded flats too. They are thicker than the standard AKM receiver, 1.5mm vs 1mm. I built my Romanian RPK.

The pistol you refer to is likely the Nambu type 94. It was made in 8 mm.

It is a collector’s item, difficult to obtain ammunition for.

I bet that girl will shoot ALL. DAY. LONG. Nice! Now if we can just get Trump to end the Bush 1 era import EO ban, the Clinton Era parts and armor ban EO lifted, Bush 2 era ammo ban, and Obama 7n6 ban and parts ban lifted, we’d be set!
