An Egyptian lion trainer was killed by one of the lions during a circus show in Alexandria, northern Egypt.
A security source told Al Arabiya.net that Shaheen Islam was a 35-year-old who worked as a trainer for lions in the Lion village in Alexandria and died due to injuries as a result of an attack by the lion during the show.
He added that the trainer was giving a presentation for students when the lion attacked him, injuring him seriously, leading to his led to his death days after he entered the Andalusian Salam hospital's intensive care in the Smouha area, east of Alexandria.
He said Islam suffered fractured bones of the skull, chest, cuts on his face and neck, and abdominal bleeding.
Islams brother, said the lion that fatally attacked his brother was procured by circus management from South Africa, pointing out that his brother has been in this profession for 10 years, and has a lot of experience. But the lion was new and caught him by surprise.
Sharif Emam, owner of the circus, revealed that there were five assistants to protect Islam and the other trainers, and it seemed it was destined to happen.
He said the incident occurred within 30 seconds, and that the lion weighed 20 kilograms.
He looked like he was treating that animal with contempt. Looking at it, there was no doubt in my mind that lion had a grudge and dislike for that guy, and when it saw the chance...it took it.
The guy looked like a foolhardy ass turning as he did, in my opinion.
Terrible to see it happen right in front of kids.
Do they mean 200 kg?
Been wanting to do that for years.
Almost as soon as he turned his back, that lion started to gather itself. What a fool. And his brother saying he wasn’t used to that lion makes him look even more like a fool.
Phew, I thought this was about Matthew Stafford and Jim Caldwell.
I was thinking the same thing.
That's just over 3 stone. That lion must have been as wiry and he or she was in bad disposition.

Hahahaha
That’s a damn shame.
The trainer had 10 years of experience, was not some novice making mistakes. The lion was apparently recently captured in the wild and apparently not sufficiently tamed and trained.
Very sad, but I don’t want to blame the trainer.
If Wikipedia can be believed 200 kg falls in the mid range for what an average male African lion would weigh. (31 stone)
Hey, Cakdwell had the best winning percentage by a Lions coach since the 1930’s.
I am not saying that an animal trainer cannot do that, ever. Heck, the famous WWI ace Lufbery had his two lions, Whiskey and Soda, they were fully grown and followed him around (uncaged and unleashed!) like he was their mother.
Point is, he didn't know this one well enough (apparently) to judge if he could turn his back on it. Even people who know what they are doing can fall prey to familiarity and contempt. Happens with pilots all the time.
LOL, I am sure it was an Al Jazeera typo!
200 kilograms is 31 stone 6 lbs or 440 lbs. That’d be slightly heavier than average weight for a male lion.
20 kg? that is still light for a lion
