He looked like he was treating that animal with contempt. Looking at it, there was no doubt in my mind that lion had a grudge and dislike for that guy, and when it saw the chance...it took it.
The guy looked like a foolhardy ass turning as he did, in my opinion.

Terrible to see it happen right in front of kids.

Yeah, well, the lion was just doing what the big cats do, killing what looked like prey. A good read on this subject is The Book of Deadly Animals by Gordon Grice.

Almost as soon as he turned his back, that lion started to gather itself. What a fool. And his brother saying he wasn’t used to that lion makes him look even more like a fool.

I was thinking the same thing.

the lion weighed 20 kilograms. That's just over 3 stone. That lion must have been as wiry and he or she was in bad disposition.

The trainer had 10 years of experience, was not some novice making mistakes. The lion was apparently recently captured in the wild and apparently not sufficiently tamed and trained.
Very sad, but I don’t want to blame the trainer.

If Wikipedia can be believed 200 kg falls in the mid range for what an average male African lion would weigh. (31 stone)

Hey, Cakdwell had the best winning percentage by a Lions coach since the 1930’s.
To: Innovative
If he was unfamiliar with the lion, there is no way he should have treated it like that.
I am not saying that an animal trainer cannot do that, ever. Heck, the famous WWI ace Lufbery had his two lions, Whiskey and Soda, they were fully grown and followed him around (uncaged and unleashed!) like he was their mother.
Point is, he didn't know this one well enough (apparently) to judge if he could turn his back on it. Even people who know what they are doing can fall prey to familiarity and contempt. Happens with pilots all the time.

200 kilograms is 31 stone 6 lbs or 440 lbs. That’d be slightly heavier than average weight for a male lion.
