So far, the president-elect is tapping people with deep ties to Washington and Wall Street as he fills out his Cabinet, turning to two power centers he vilified as greedy, corrupt and out of touch with Americans during his White House campaign. His choices have won praise from Republicans relieved by his more conventional choices, but could risk angering voters who rallied behind his calls for upending the political system.
Two of Trump's early picks are wealthy financial industry insiders with ties to the kinds of institutions he railed against as a candidate.
Elaine Chao, his choice for transportation secretary and an accomplished political figure in her own right, is married to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell - blending family and political power in a way Trump fiercely criticized campaign rival Hillary Clinton for. Jeff Sessions, Trump's selection for attorney general, has spent two decades in the Senate, and Tom Price, his health and human services nominee, is a six-term congressman.
As a candidate, Trump said Wall Street had created "tremendous problems" for the country.
Mnuchin and Ross also have financial links to Trump's White House bid, with Mnuchin having led the campaign's fundraising efforts. Trump repeatedly bragged that his personal wealth - he mostly self-funded his campaign during the primaries - meant he would not be beholden to donors who might expect their financial contributions to be repaid with powerful jobs or insider access.
"I can't be bought," Trump said during the campaign. "I won't owe anybody anything."
Trump's transition team brushed aside questions about whether there are inconsistencies between the president-elect's campaign rhetoric and his Cabinet picks.
"These are experts who know how to win," spokesman Jason Miller said Wednesday.

FDR picked Joe Kennedy to head the SEC on the premise that it would take a crook to know how other crooks operate. I trust Trump,to set the agenda and have them follow through.
I was wondering the same thing, who would YOU pick. Rush made a point about Liberals today how they thrive on everyone being down in the ground and negative. They never talk about the goodness of the country, it’s all about how everyone is racists and sexists and all that crap. Levin really sounds like that (I truthfully don’t listen to him almost ever but I did listen to some of his show yesterday when he talked about the commerce and treasury and transportation picks) and it dawned on me. He’s exactly what Rush is talking about, he thrives on negativity, on the fact that things aren’t perfect (from his perspective of perfection). He’s similar to the Liberals, just on the other scale. The country really needs to get beyond fools like the Levin’s and Elizabeth Warrens of the world.
Agreed - stopped listening in the lead up the the election and maybe three times since, can’t stand the show anymore, he’s lost me....
Great article from the conservative treehouse. Entire article and even the comments were so informative.
Thanks for the link!
There are a fair number of insiders.
You’re welcome. Agree or disagree, I wish there was more such info. (and discussion) on FR. It’s great stuff to forward to any who might listen. :-)
Also, linked to in that article is an older piece; quite interesting as well:
Yes, that link was actually the article I was referring to, and comments below it. Great stuff.
FR had similar quality years ago. The jokesters are trying to take over here the past few years, takes more effort to find the good posts. But FR is still my No. 1 place.
I love the sound of jealous malcontents eating their hearts out...
Trump has to make deals to get what he wants. His cabinet appointments answer to him. He is smart picking insiders that make the Repubs happy and upset the Dems. If they don’t execute his plans the way he wants does anyone think he won’t fire them? The media acts like Trump is a 2 year old that will ask permission of his cabinet to do anything. They have learned nothing from the election as he has been ahead of them at every turn. He is being a pragmatic leader which is required to get things done.
Now if he abandons everything he said and goes all in on business as usual he is toast. Let’s wait and see what happens before freaking out.
Interesting...thanks for the info.
I guess someone out there is spreading rumors...again...I had heard whinings about Ms DeVos being connected to Common Core. I guess that was a misleading statement, she was affiliated with groups that supported it. Sounds better than I thought.
As for the other guys, I was right, trust Trump’s instincts. sounds like a pretty good crew so far. Never had much doubt about Hillary’s constant bloviating about Trump reducing taxes for the rich, I already knew he also wanted to include also removing a number of the loopholes, writeoffs and deductions that allow them to pay almost nothing although their tax rate (by percentage) is actually higher. That was just Hillary lying again and I already knew it before she ever opened her mouth.
So far it’s looking pretty good for the home team...Forbes says 6% growth? COOL...
America dialed 9-1-1...and Donald Trump answered the phone...
Why do they have to be broke. Colin Kapernick may be needing a job before long.
I think Gowdy would have been great. His very public statements about the stonewalling were the best resume trump could have gotten.
I agree, I always wanted to see Gowdy as AG, he’s a bulldog, has a great record as SC prosecutor, (never lost a case) doesn’t back down and doesn’t give up, and is smart as they get. That was my main disappointment, but I think Sessions just might be just as good.
I know this, he’s been on Trump’s team since day one, and Trump knows he will do his job, not play politics like Holder and Lynch have done.
Looks like a masters of the universe wall street cabinet so far.
This makes sense though. Trump is wealthy and from NYC, so this is his social network. He does not have experience of any kind of public office, so he has to defer to a lot of people for the mechanics of white house business.
Those that can...do
Those that can't...teach
Those that can't teach...consult
Sometimes you have dive in and get dirty before you can open the drain...
I LOL’d when I heard Chao. You can’t get any more establishment.
Poor Mark Levin. He wants so much to be a team player but the Lord hath cast him to be a truth sayer instead.
Ok geniuses.
You have to fill potions in fiance and budget management. You have people you had ran your campaign fund raising and is a geniuses in financing and budget issues. Where else do you go get the expert trustworthy advice?
I supposed Trump should of hired some idiot never done anything or had no knowledge of the problem but was ideologically pure instead?
Stop being morons and chicken littles #Never Trumpers. Your LOOKING for things to bitch about because your hero Cruz got his ass kicked in the primary. This isn’t about fact, it is about finding something new to whine about daily.
