One model with a mullet and mustache throws a 'Blue Steel' pose as he models a velour dressing gown while another similar-looking chap stands confidently in a snazzy pair of bell-bottom trousers.
These are snapshots from a range of 1970s adverts showing the most popular men's fashions of the day.
High-waist pants, skimpy briefs, synthetic fabrics and psychedelic patterns seem to be in vogue - looks more suited to the fancy dress parties of today.

OMG I just got to the belted knit sweater section!
This really is horrible!
I laugh it off, I was never a fashion maven. Just give me a polo shirt, khakis, and I'm fine.
Seriously, looking at these now, it seems the fashion designers were just trying to make all the men look like queers!
When I was small - 6ish - in the early 70s the thing I remember most was a shirt my mom got me that had a zipper down the front where a polo shirt has buttons.
The reason I remember is is that darned thing caught the skin of my throat in the zipper twice (once from another kid yanking up on it hard trying to be a badass) - both times drawing blood. Hated that shirt.
Mine was bright green.
I thought Nehru jackets were more of a late 60’s thing, I had one in the late 70’s that had belonged to a cousin, made by Jansen I think, thought it was cool and very 60’s retro, even though it wasn’t even ten years old yet.
I just knew it. Moochie stole her boob belt idea from 1970’s men’s sweater fashions.
If there ever was an era I would like to blacken from my memory it was the 70’s fashions, with the late 60’s and early 80’s included. WTF were they thinking? Don’t forget the 3” heeled boots to go with those styles.
LOL. If that was the goal they succeeded!
From 1970 to 1980 was ages 15-25 for me so some of those ads were pointed at my age group but I can honestly say that I wore very little of those “fashions.” I also did not sport helmet hair, a porn stache, or a cod piece.
I think fashion shows are put on for the designers to outdo each other. Not much of that actually shows up on the shelves at JC Penney, as far as I can tell.
Yes, Cary Grant is dressed impeccably in that photo.
Makes me wonder what we’re doing today that people are going to make fun of in 40 years.
We wore bell bottoms all the time, and we bleached them ourselves, everyone wore them, they were cool, miss those days ...
Yeah but nothing could match the shoes with the goldfish in the heels.
My wife asked me to ware my old medallion from the 60’s recently. She could not believe I still had it! I pointed out it is the one piece of attire from that era that still fit.
“I think the 1970s were the worst decade on record for mens fashion!”

Men’s fashions? The women’s fashion were just as bad.
Natural fabrics were virtually impossible to find-—and the platform shoes? Don’t ask.
.
That was a nod to the Limelight disco, which had sharks swimming under the plexiglass dance floor. The peak of disco-era excess. As I recall, a big fuss was raised about animal cruelty. It probably wasn't very pleasant being a goldfish in those things.
