The world's oldest woman has celebrated another birthday, as she turned 117 today.
Italian woman Emma Morano is the last known person alive to have been born in the 19th century, and the oldest person on record in the world.
She celebrated the landmark day by enjoying a birthday cake wth her carers in her home in Verbania, a town in northern Italy on Lake Maggiore.

“My kids are astounded there was no cable TV and the TVs were black and white with no remote.”
It is amazing the lack of perspective that many people have. I knew a guy who died about a year ago at age 105 - he had seen damned near everything that there was to see, and was sharp enough to talk about all of it. He was truly a treasure, as are most of the centenarians.
One drawback to living so long is that everyone you knew growing up - and their kids - are dead. I guess that you have to be adept at making new friends.
Interestingly, this morning I was visiting my mother at her independent living place (she’s a kid, only 79), and I got introduced to one of the new residents, a 96-year-old. She was very spry, and very sharp. One of my mother’s friends said, “Watch out, she’s got a potty mouth.” The old lady merely smiled, and I said, “I suppose that looking at the state of the world today, that’s the only proper reaction.” She laughed. She’ll be around for a while - I wouldn’t be surprised if she makes it past 100 with ease.
My wife’s granny is 90. She gets drunk on wine every afternoon and prays for the Lord to take her because, she says, the world has gone crazy. I haven’t talked to her since the election.
She is the oldest person alive, but there are still two women alive who were born in 1900. So there are three people alive who were born in the 19th century, not just one.
One of the great pleasures I’ve had in life was serving on the Board for an Assisted Living Facility. I got to know quite a few of the residents, and their spunk. But also made me realize how tough those who came before us had it. And if some didn’t like the way things were going at the facility, they would certainly let you know - in no uncertain terms.
I astounded my students when I told them that I met my great grandmother who was born during the Civil War.
Another astounding fact: John Tyler, the 10th President of the United States, who was born in 1790, has two grandchildren who are still alive today. How is that possible, you might ask?

Don’t tell me - she eats nothing but cheeseburgers and smokes a pack a day....
