Fresno police Officer Bernie Vizcarra was on a routine patrol Saturday evening in downtown Fresno when he noticed sparks and small flames erupting from beneath a blue Toyota pickup heading south on M Street.
His first thought? Wow, that doesnt look good.

I there something wrong with my tire?
Do I know someone you want to hire?
You want me to take a flyer?
Once in a parking lot I was slammed into by a bus driven by a deaf guy because he couldn’t hear me laying on the horn. He never slowed down. Thanks Auto Club, for saying it was my fault!
I’m deaf as a post, even with a set of really good hearing aids. I’m into situational awareness though, from many years on motorcycles, amongst other things. My eyes are moving all the time.
Too much kaboomite and gunfire, I turned out to be more sensitive to it than I was thought to be.
“...but he added he had just bought a lottery ticket and hoped his luck might change for the better.”
Yeah...that’s the ticket.
I drove a burning car without knowing it once. I had an old Cadillac, and had to replace the in-tank fuel pump (nasty job). I took it for a drive for several miles and was headed home down a residential street when I passed a house with some people out in the yard. They started yelling “Your car is on fire!”, so naturally I stopped and jumped out. Apparently, one of the fuel lines wasn’t tight enough and leaked gas on the tailpipe or caused a spark or some other cause, but my beater ‘81 Caddy burned to the ground while the cops and firemen watched. I was actually disappointed when the gas tank blew, because all that happened was a “WHOOMPF!” and the gas cap blew about 50 feet. It wasn’t much of a loss, except for the $120 fuel pump, 2 good tires, and my labor in installing the pump (incorrectly, apparently). Oh yeah, and a tank of gas.
No. My truck is not for hire
The “Core Deaf” (the ones who never, ever have heard a sound) are absolutely petrified of being stopped by the police.
If you know one of these folks, tell them to get a placard that says something like “Deaf driver - can you please write it down for me?”, and have it laminated. It can live (upside down) on the dashboard directly in front of the steering wheel. NOT in the overhead visor (”GUN!”), NOT under the seat (GUN!”) - on the dashboard.
If that tank was close to empty it would have been a much bigger kaboom
After watching all those cars blow up in the movies, I was a little disappointed.
License was up for renewal this summer and this time I had to do it in person which amounted to taking a new picture, reading a computerized letter chart to an examiner and giving them some money. No one seemed to care or test for hearing, likely because they don’t have the proper equipment or training. But I’m good to go for another ten years. If I lose my hearing or sight during that time guess I’m on my honor.

No, if you lose your sight, your doctor notifies the DMV. I don’t think that they give two hoots about hearing.
Similar thing happened to me. Got slammed in the side of my car by a large food truck while in a gas station. Insurance wouldn’t pay. When I said I was laying on the horn and the driver STILL slammed into me, they said the food truck driver might not have heard my horn because he had his radio on loud. What?
The insurance companies don’t build those big tall buildings because they’re giving their money away.
First word , Officer shoots his gun ,second word
Unless it is age onset or recent due to illness or other catastrophe - most HOH drives (like me) speechread and pay more attention because we have trouble hearing.
As far as I know in most states there are none. I have never been asked and have had hearing issues since childhood.
That is good advice
You thought it was a beater but it became a burner.
sorry.
