A school bus driver who authorities say was speeding along a narrow, winding road when he wrapped his vehicle around a tree was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide in the deaths of five children.
The wreck Monday afternoon plunged the city of Chattanooga into mourning, with parents stricken by the news and people lining up to donate blood.
"The most unnatural thing in the world is for a parent to mourn the loss of a child," Mayor Andy Berke said. "There are no words that can bring comfort to a mother or a father. So today, the city is praying for these families."
Police said Johnthony Walker, 24, was driving well over the posted 30 mph limit when he lost control of the bus. He was jailed on $107,500 bail for a court appearance Nov. 29 on charges that also included reckless driving and reckless endangerment.

My wife’s family was involved in a deal like this back in the 90s... don’t want to give TMI, but, what came to light afterwards was it was all about cost. For the school district and for the state it happened in.
Unfortunately it doesn’t take a a collision with a tractor trailer or getting t boned to kill people in a school bus. It just takes an accident, because the passengers aren’t restrained.
Nah, I just heard the chief of police or whatever from that jurisdiction. He figured out what went wrong in this crash. It’s because there are no mandatory seat belts on the bus and he won’t rest until this great social deficiency is fixed.
Sometimes I wonder if there’s any use even trying.
An ex high school principal here. In North Carolina in the 70’s many drivers were high school students especially in the rural areas. I found them to be very careful drivers. I think things have changed now.I do believe they had a maximum speed of 45.
