It’s Official: NASA’s Physics Defying EM Drive Just Passed Peer Review

M Drive, the microwave radiation thruster capable of propelling a spacecraft without any fuel, has been heating up the debates over the past couple of years. The concept of EM Drive has been facing harsh criticism as it appears to violate the Newton’s Third Law of Motion, which says that every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

In a recent development, a full and official peer-reviewed paper on EM Drive has been published online. This paper has appeared via the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)’s Journal of Propulsion and Power.

While the publication of this paper doesn’t guarantee EM Drive’s real world applications, it surely approves the methodology of the experiments. It also confirms that NASA’s EM Drive constantly produces 1.2 millinewtons per kilowatt of thrust in a vacuum.

Who believes a panel of Imams, anyway?

Exactly, how does it defy the laws of physics?

I guess you’re getting a reaction without an action. Or something.

Which means we don’t fully understand physics correctly.

I believe that it is absolutely true that you cannot get more energy out of a system/reaction than is put into it - unless the extra energy is coming from someplace else. Perhaps the configuration is opening up a pathway for energy from somewhere else.

That is also the physics that I learned but I have been reading about this for the last couple of years and it works, it happens. That is hard to argue against.

Thank you for a reasoned reply. If the energy is not conserved the device is acquiring energy by some process not yet understood. There is always an explanation.

I’m not saying that the results the scientists are observing are not real, I’m saying that extra energy maybe coming from someplace else to account for the output over input.

Sorry, I could be more cogent but I am already two martinis into my lunch. ;). Jesus drank wine but I drink vodka.

The long and the short of it is bouncing microwaves around in a specially shaped closed container produces thrust in a particular direction. About .15 grams of thrust per kilowatt pumped in.

Infinite Improbability Drive

The principle of generating small amounts of finite improbability by simply hooking the logic circuits of a Bambleweeny 57 Sub-Meson Brain to an atomic vector plotter suspended in a strong Brownian Motion producer (say a nice hot cup of tea) were of course well understood — and such generators were often used to break the ice at parties by making all the molecules in the hostess’s undergarments leap simultaneously one foot to the left, in accordance with the theory of indeterminacy.

Many respectable physicists said that they weren’t going to stand for this, partly because it was a debasement of science, but mostly because they didn’t get invited to those sorts of parties.

Another thing they couldn’t stand was the perpetual failure they encountered while trying to construct a machine which could generate the infinite improbability field needed to flip a spaceship across the mind-paralyzing distances between the farthest stars, and at the end of the day they grumpily announced that such a machine was virtually impossible.

Then, one day, a student who had been left to sweep up after a particularly unsuccessful party found himself reasoning in this way: If, he thought to himself, such a machine is a virtual impossibility, it must have finite improbability. So all I have to do in order to make one is to work out how exactly improbable it is, feed that figure into the finite improbability generator, give it a fresh cup of really hot tea... and turn it on!

He did this and was rather startled when he managed to create the long sought after golden Infinite Improbability generator. He was even more startled when just after he was awarded the Galactic Institute’s Prize for Extreme Cleverness he was lynched by a rampaging mob of respectable physicists who had realized that one thing they couldn’t stand was a smart-arse.

Remember Newton’s laws of motion:

1 - You can’t win
2 - you can’t break even
3 - you can’t get out of the game.

1 - you can’t get more energy out of a system than you pump in. Entropy always takes its share, fair or not.

2 - perpetual motion is for suckers; this way to the egress, gentlemen.

3 - anything you do does something else. push something, it pushes back.

The “law” we’re being told this system violates is the one of conserved momentum, M1V1=M2V2. Mass 1 exerting velocity against Mass 2 creates another velocity proportional to the masses. Big gun shot by little guy knocks little guy over (great example of this in youtube, some Saudi prince shooting a .600 NE or something, knocking him on his butt - definitely worth the price of admission).

So there’s this chamber in which a standing wave is produced, one end larger than the other and this difference in AREA produces a difference in momentum. tiny, but, apparently, measurable.

Remember, “photons” carry momentum but no (or nearly no) mass), a standing wave should exert “pressure” on both ends of the vessel equally.

I think the basic thing everyone’s missing is, THERE’S A NET INPUT OF ENERGY. There’s an enormous LOSS there somewhere (micronewtons for a KILOWATT?), heat, I’m sure, plus a minute amount of “thrust” or linear momentum in return.

Solar panels? Forget that. Nukes. Plutonium-run devices like we’re using on Mars.

This has potential.

This is the long sought “impulse” drive of Star Trek lore. Its odd, because there is no propellant- like an expanding gas in rocket fuel- to generate the thrust. So... you have a blast of high energy “light”- micro waves which are close to radio waves. You don’t get this magic thrust from any other form of light. What is going on? Lots of theories, little actual facts; other than the fact that it seems to work. Well work this one out... then on the warp engine ‘-)

Ok so it’s a thruster that doesn’t use convention fuel. It still uses a “fuel” called electricity that it converts to emit microwave radiation. The radiation is shot down a conical cavity. The “thrust” is speculated to be from the thermal wave from the radiation that is directed out of the cavity.

Don’t know how any of that defies the laws of physics, but it looks like it fits within all the laws.

For people that are supposedly really smart, they are really dumb.
