SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) — Got milk? Chances are it’s from California. There are more dairy cows in the Golden State than anywhere else in the country. But all that milk and cheese comes at a cost to the planet.
Tom Frantz keeps a running count. He says dairy farms have taken over his farming community in the San Joaquin Valley. “There are ten of them within what I call smelling distance of my home,” he said, noting they’ve moved in in just the last 10 years.

Got milk? Chances are it’s from California. Chances are about 1 in 5 it's from California, and that's mostly people who live in the Southwest. If you live in the upper Midwest, chances are it's from Wisconsin or Minnesota, if the Pacific Northwest, chances are it's from Idaho. If you live in the Northeast, chances are it's from New York or PA.
Who researches this stuff?

The finest pasture in the country and a mild climate aiding the health of the cows. Alfalfa and silage corn as far as the eye can see.
This is also the national epicenter for dairy processing...all the other milk that goes into EVERYTHING. Yes, your fresh milk is local, but the rest of it comes from here.
