What began as a wrong text from an Arizona grandmother to a 17-year-old ended in a heartwarming story.
Wanda Dench thought she was texting her grandson when she sent out details about Thanksgiving dinner, KSAZ reports
But instead, 17-year-old high school senior Jamal Hinton got the random message while in class.
Jamal texted back asking who it was, and Dench responded with: "It's your grandma."
Jamal asked for her picture "just to double check."
Dench responded with a photo of herself. Jamal then sent her a photo of himself to establish that they were not related. But he figured he'd ask if the offer for Thanksgiving dinner still stood.
Dench, a complete stranger, said she would still save a plate for him because "that's what grandmas do. Feed everyone."
Never have - do not now - never will, text.
How did she get the guy’s addy in her phone?
You text to a phone number. So just a wrong number.

“that’s what grandmas do. Feed everyone.”
Up to a point. If I accidentally invited a random stranger and I had plenty to share and I had no reason to fear any harm from that stranger, then I would leave the invitation standing and hope that we both would have a good experience out of it. But if literally everyone who wants a meal was prepared to show up at my home, I would not be able to feed them all or manage crowd control and the misunderstandings that would likely result. Similarly, allowing one person in need to be rescued by allowing him or her to immigrate to our wealthy society would probably be a morally good thing to do. But, unless we are infinitely wealthy, we can’t provide food and shelter and everything else to every deserving needy person in the world. Wherever we do draw the line, we will be in a sense arbitrary, but we need to draw it somewhere. That’s why we need an orderly process for admitting people into our country, a set of laws that we establish and adjust as necessary.
no good deed goes unpunished
Okay, got it.
If the number’s active, someone gets your unintended message.
Not like a dedicated email addy, which if wrong, is bounced back.
Yes, texting is evil evil evil!! A democrat plot! No good conservative would ever text.
You’re being sarcastic, I take it? Texting is handy if talking is difficult or not possible. It’s also very useful in areas with weak cell reception. A text will often go through when voice will not.
Good thing she didn't text 1-800-MEXICO
No, texting is eroding the very fabric of humanity!
In fifty years, our offspring will have lost all ability to verbally communicate except with grunts and pointing, due to being completely depending on texting! Children will just be named with variations of smileys, and all legal documents will need to be translated into texting abbreviations and acronyms or nobody will be able to interpret them!
Only if it is a cell phone number AND it has text messaging enabled.
With a more the merrier attitude, my family has long been in the habit of inviting and enjoying the company of assorted friends and acquaintances to Thanksgiving dinner.
Not evil; just unnecessary for me.
My flipphone’s texting, email and Net access are disabled. No camera. I have a Nikon for that. No data plan. All I do with it is make/take phone calls. I have computers at home, so when I leave, I want to be unplugged.
If we didn't have texting / iMessaging, we'd never hear from our kids. We keep in touch with them all over the country every day that way. They hardly ever open their email programs, so those can go unread / unanswered for days.
It's real easy to take photos on the phone when my wife and I travel and send them to the kids and other relatives via text. It sure beats buying a postcard, writing it out, finding a stamp, and putting it in a mailbox.
Five years ago on a birthday trip, we all climbed to the top of Mount Washburn in Yellowstone. The kids were texting out their adventure from the top of the mountain. My wife and I sent texts and photos a few days ago from a long hike in the Sawtooths in Idaho. Shot this on my Olympus camera, wifi'd it to my phone, and sent it out.
Is that you, Dice?
If you are still getting service you aren’t far enough out there :D Where we go we are often many miles from any coverage.
