I know, I know, were all tired of the political posts. But this one is a little different.
Back in 2005, a group of high school students were watching The Apprentice as part of their Business class. Teacher Dan Smith encouraged the class to write to Donald Trump, and tell them what they were learning from his show. Trump responded by personally inviting the entire class to Trump Tower in New York City. A NewsChannel 13 photographer and I were invited to tag along.
I had seen The Apprentice. I knew that Trump wasnt a very nice guy. I knew he looked down on women and the media and since I was both I was terrified at the thought of interviewing him. I'm not easily intimidated, but this time was different. Would he ridicule me? Mock me? Say something rude to me? I had seen him do it on his show.
That morning, the students boarded a bus for New York City, and we followed in a news car. Several hours later, we arrived at Trump Tower. The students were seated in the atrium, and we waited. Then, almost as if on cue, down the escalator came a larger than life Donald Trump, accompanied by The Apprentice Season 2 winner Kelly Perdew. Trump spoke with the kids about his experience as a young person in real estate, having a strong work ethic, and loyalty. He told them that when you are passionate about what you do, it never seems like work. He then spent another half hour with them, answered every single question those students had, and then treated them all to lunch.
As he was leaving, I had to approach him and ask him for an interview. Excuse me, Mr. Trump? I managed to get out and somehow I made it through the entire interview. Guess what? He didnt ridicule me. He didnt mock me or say anything rude to me. He was gracious and accommodating and surprisingly pleasant. I have never forgotten that. I have interviewed a number of celebrities over the years, and been disappointed by several whose work I admired, but who turned out to be jerks in real life. Trump was the opposite.
I prefer to believe that this person that we have seen in public is a caricature; a persona he has created for himself. He is a master marketer, and it has worked well for him. I can say that the Donald Trump I met is not the same Donald Trump I have seen on the campaign trail.
I only hope we see more of the first one.

Here's the story on the Shen students from 2005.

Kelly, don’t believe everything you hear and see in the news. It might not be true.
I am posting this outside my office. If anyone asks I'll let them know its our President.
“I was terrified at the thought of interviewing him. I’m not easily intimidated, but this time was different. Would he ridicule me? Mock me? Say something rude to me? I had seen him do it on his show. “
The sentence is a contradiction. How can a person not be easily intimidated, yet “terrified” of ridicule, mocking, or having someone say something rude?
The article is a nice bit of truth, but that sentence is bizarre.
Am I correct in assuming that since this is WGY from the NY capital district that ‘Shen’ is Shenendehowa HS in Clifton Park NY?
The article and even the TV clip seems to expect you to know that, but if I hadn’t lived there for 6 years, I’d have no idea and I expect most others wouldn’t either.
I would say that to date she’d been able to handle most anything and WASN’T intimidated but from what had been reported about the man, perhaps that was about to change if he followed true to form the media made of him. Makes sense to me. There’s a first time for everything and foolish to believe there isn’t.
I heard them talking about this on the radio this AM and then I saw the video and thought Trump was so great in this that I should try to pass it along.
Shenendehowa was recently in the news for this nuttiness. But I liked the 2005 story much better :)
Shenendehowa superintendent says hate speech increased after election
Oh, no...it’s not your fault. It’s the reporters’ fault! You did great! :-)
He's such a mean guy that he's given millions upon millions to charities and to individuals down on their luck. He hates women and it's proven by out of 14 seasons of Apprentice, he's chosen 2, yes count them, TWO more men than women. One of the consestants has been brought on his campaign team who's a man, uh, no, scratch that. But then look at his winning campaign manager, a man... uh, no, wait, scratch that, too.
The person who wrote this is a journalist? Yipes! One would think that a basic knowledge of sentence structure and a familiarity with proper punctuation would be required.
