If Madisonians wanted to keep their liberal talk radio station, they might have started by listening to it at least as much as people listen to the home of conservative talker Vicki McKenna.
That they didnt is not a sign that there are thousands of secret conservatives lurking in the Madison shadows. Nor is it a criticism.
The owners of WXXM-FM, formerly known as The Mic, announced this week that it would drop its liberal talk format. In the most recent Nielsen ratings, it had been drawing a 2.1 share, or less than half that drawn by WIBA-AM, home to McKenna, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.
The Mic is not alone. Liberal talk on commercial radio has long failed to garner the audience and ad dollars conservative talk has although youd think it would have had a better shot in Madison.
When I asked him to explain The Mics format change, Stu Levitan, who hosted a show on the station called Books and Beats, said competition for the liberal listener from public radio and the nonprofit WORT-FM might have played a role.
NPR attracts educated people on both sides of the aisle, but mostly Democrats, said Henck, an oddity in commercial talk radio in that he doesnt swing too far to the left or right. The Mic appeals to lefties and lefty activists. They are not the same.
And no, there arent enough lefty activists, he said.
Madison and Milwaukee radio host Derrell Connor, who also cultivates a more middle-of-the-road approach, and Dave Black, general manager of UW-Madisons student radio, told me that liberal radio hosts in general might not be as good at the craft of talk radio as conservative radio hosts are.
Say what you want about Rush, Connor said. Rush is good at what he does.

Who wants the listen to damn liberal rant on about how stupid conservative are. Rush has liberals who regularly listen. He puts them to the head of the line when ever they call in an treats them respectfully. Liberal talk can only exist if assholes like Geo. Soros foots the bill!!!

After two years of dismal ratings and red ink!!!
Time to finally defund NPR.
Pray America woke.
Xcellent idea! Useless radio.
Whatever happened to the Air America radio network???
Vicki McKenna ping!
I guess if they did 24/7 of static, they’ll have better ratings than now with lib talkers...
