Tattoo Removal: Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time

Regret, job searches and changing rules within the military are fueling tattoo removals.

The industry has grown at faster pace than ever before and it's estimated to be worth $83 billion within two-years.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 46-percent of millennials have removed tattoos before entering the job market.

The technology to remove tattoos has also come a long way since the 1990's.

La Mesa doctor Ellyn Levine said she has been removing more tattoos than ever before, and uses the most most effective method there is today.

"I think the technology has advanced literally in months. Some of them are coming to an age where they are regretting that decision," she said.

In June the Marine Corps changed its tattoo regulations banning tattoos on the head and neck, single tattoos that cannot covered on the hand and limited the size and numbers.

People like 33-year-old Melanie Besseck just want to make room for something new. "When I walk around I am my own canvas and I can tell you a story just by looking at my tattoos," she said.

By using a California made machine, Dr. Levine removed the first tattoo Besseck ever got.

The lasers on the machine blast energy through the skin - shattering the ink.

In 1969 I had my then GF’s initials printed on my right should. I left her for a real bitch. Never covered or removed the tat, now 47 years later, she and I may hook up.

I remember feeling ambivalent about a spending bill a Kali congresswoman put through for the taxpayers to pick up the cost of removal of gang tattoos for convicts.

Must have been a decade or so ago.

Never had a tattoo but after recent shoulder reconstruction, I am thinking about a 3D zipper tattoo to cover the scars. Pure vanity, I know.

haha. Not a bad idea actually.

I have a neighbor who looks to be in his early to mid 20’s. He looks like he was standing still and was spray painted by a passing graffiti artist with no talent. Arms, legs, torso

Actress Kaley Cuoco (Big Bang Theory) had a tattoo of her wedding date place in the back just below her neck. The marriage ended in less then 2 years and instead of removing said tattoo she had it turned into a moth making it even more hideous.

Several years ago a dermatologist told me tattoo removal would be easy if they would standardize the inks used. Seems like the ink industry would endorse this to increase their customer base.

Having joined the Army at 19 I can begin to understand why a young kid...first time away from home...in the rough and tumble military...possibly facing combat (in '69 at least)...OK,I can begin to understand.Otherwise...sorry,no sale.

I saw a girl at the local college who had “C’est la vie” tattooed in headline style block letters across her very large breasts. My first though was what irony when those start to sag.

Ironic, yes. It's probably genetic in her family, large chesties, that is.

She COULD have had breast reduction. She still could.
It's probably SUPER expensive, though.

Fort Knox: gold.
Was it a Bond 007 movie where Auric Goldfinger wanted to steal gold from Fort Knox?

Hard to forget SOME events in life, isn't it?

My father hated tattoos and he was in the Navy. God bless him.

Here's a very, very old joke.

He: Only sailors and whores have tattoos.

She: Hey, my mother has a tattoo!.

He (sheepishly) : Oh, what ship did she serve on??.

I’ve told this story several times already on FR, but in the locker room this lady had a hot dog shape tattooed on her butt. I asked her what it represented. She scowled and said it was a smiley face. I really put my foot in my mouth that day, I vowed never to ask about tattoos again.

I’d like to think that’s just painted on and not a tattoo.
