Jose Fernandez Found With Cocaine, Alcohol In System At Death (Miami Marlins pitcher)
CBS Miami ^ | 10/29/2016 | James Amalino

Posted on 10/29/2016 2:20:44 PM PDT by simpson96

MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Toxicology reports released Saturday in the death of Jose Fernandez have revealed that the star pitcher used drugs and alcohol just before crashing his boat off Miami Beach.

Fernandez and two friends, Emilio Macias, 27, and Eduardo Rivero, 25, died last month.

Reports show Fernandez’s blood alcohol was at 0.147, nearly twice the legal limit, and he had cocaine and other substances in his system at the time of his death.

Both Macias and Rivero were found to be under the legal limit for alcohol. Though, Rivero’s blood showed cocaine and other substances, as well. Macias was determined to not have any cocaine in his system.

It’s believed that the 24-year-old Fernandez was behind the wheel of the Kaught Looking, the 32-foot SeaVee he owned that crashed along a jetty near Government Cut on September 25th. Authorities, however, have not yet made this determination.

In a statement issued by Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, the disclosure of the autopsy and toxicology reports for Fernandez, Macias and Rivero came after numerous requests and a battle for public release.

I think that is a gut reaction because we know what horror he could have caused for a family.

But I dont wish he suffered and I think our fellow FReeper just spoke out of anger, as that was my first reaction too.

But I’m SICK of people dying because of OTHER people’s imbibing. We all are i’m sure.

Not to berate anyone’s death. . .but, I believe the entire sports world needs a first class enema or a grand send off. . .as in goodbye. Little if no redeeming qualities are displayed on or off the field/court. Role models for kids - not.

A few thoughts:

—The guy was a very talented pitcher—and this was a major loss for all baseball fans.

—Big money and fame is something many young people just can’t handle. There are more things the league can do, the sports agents can do, and their families can do to help.

—And, he did kill two people in the boat.

This is the definition of tragedy.

.147 is very messed up. Add the coke and he was totally blotto. Of course, the authorities immediately declared that alcohol and drugs did not appear to be a factor. When a boat crashes full speed into a well-known jetty at 3:00 a.m. alcohol and/or drugs are presumed.

Just because he didn’t kill someone doesn’t mean he couldn’t have.

He killed his two passengers.

You get in a car with a guy who had booze, coke and other substances, it’s not a homicide.

It’s a suicide.

Now we know why his friend texted him and said don’t take the boat out.

But I have to think cocaine made it infinitely worse.

I tried cocaine only ONCE at a party I hosted at my apartment and it was provided by a fellow employee.......

I absolutely loved it but recognized then and there the addictive quality of the drug and never again touched it.............

What a shame for Fernandez and his family and all the kids that looked up to him............

Same here. I guess I’m lucky that I wasn’t caught but there were times I had 7 beers and still drove home.

A lot of people did stupid things like that when they were young. Maybe not so much with drugs, but definitely getting stoned out of their minds with alcohol, which obviously is an insane thing to do before, or while, driving.

the authorities immediately declared that alcohol and drugs did not appear to be a factor

That's because they didn't find drugs or alcohol in the boat or on the bodies. Anyone with two brain cells knew the probability of alcohol/drugs on the tox screen approached 100%.

I tried marijuana once, but I didn't inhale.

I tried it once and my throat burned and i got paranoid lol.

Figures with me.

Glad you didn’t go down that road.

I know the cab drivers used to tell me when I drove that crack was a THOUSAND times better than an orgasm. I’m NOT touching something that feels that good!!!!

And yes, this was 25 years ago and ALL of the night drivers except me were crack fiends.

No drug tests then. Hell, no licences sometimes!!

What a shame for Fernandez and his family and all the kids that looked up to him...

And his poor grandmother who he loved so much, if she is still around.

“She’s the love of my life... my everything,” Fernandez said.

The day before winning the Rookie of the Year Award, a shocked Fernandez was reunited with his grandmother in Florida with help from Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria.

Hard to believe he could have been this messed up and never gotten caught in a drug test. Alcohol maybe, but an ongoing cocaine habit is nearly impossible to hide.

It is heart-breaking because he always seemed to be a ‘good kid’ BUT like so many other young, suddenly wealthy athletes, he failed a significant test of maturity, that of the danger of mixing driving, intoxicants and darkness!

R.I.P. with prayers for his family, fans and other loved ones!

He was just 24, but unlike that schmuck Kaepernick, he really seemed to be proud to be an American. He had come from Cuba with his mother, who’s life he saved, ironically, in a boating incident fleeing that communist sh*thole.

Pro sports are a great way to keep millions of fans from paying attention to what’s going on and doing anything about it.
