Wactor said the young bull elk might return to North Carolina if there are no females where it is in Pickens County.
Biologist said elk were eliminated from the southern Appalachian Mountains in the late 1700s due to over-hunting and loss of habitat. They said the species neared extinction across North American by 1900.
...it is pretty cool see the mountain elk come home after 300 years missing in action.

In michigan about one year ago, a bow hunter was knocked over by a black bear as he drew back his compound bow for a shot at a deer. He never saw bear until it clocked him. That’s a story for deer camp.
Did that one come down from Three Mile Island?
Appears to be an unusual color for na elk?
Elk used to winter on the plains before settlers and farmers pushed them up into the Rockies.
It’s passed down in local lore until it’s written down.
A couple years ago I remember reading about a guy and his son bow hunting for elk on top of a knoll and they were grunting an elk in in front of them when they were attacked from behind by a grizzly. IIRC the son killed the griz with his bow.
Here in Northern Illinois when they get elk sightings, first thing is to call Elk Grove Illinois.
They have a captive herd in a large park.
I would be careful walking up to Bambi. Have you ever seen video of a deer attack? Isn’t pretty, they have very sharp hooves.
Cougar kill a deer a week. If you have lots of bears the cougar will have to kill more deer because bear have been known to take the deer from the cougar.
This was a very good TV show on the elk that suddenly appeared in eastern Oregon, apparently having come down from Canada. This was sent to me in February 2015. Very well done and fun watching, with a few warnings:

Glad none of them critters inhabit these parts.
I remember sitting in that backup!
No bears in Middle Tennessee. Plenty of deer, though.
Hey... I’m way ahead of ya. I walked into our guest bedroom the other day and there was a black bear sitting on the futon. I asked him what was the big idea and he just shrugged his shoulders and said.... “Hey man...climate change. Get used to it.”
Driving north on US 24 through Tennessee, fog and rain, late at night, we almost hit a cougar!
From nose to tip of tail was wider than the Ford Expedition we were driving!
We both saw it, no question about it!!
Interesting
I dunno. A 700 lb Black Bear has to be about as big a problem as a small Brown Bear. Think of it, they say in Lewis and Clark times there were Plains Grizlies that were even bigger than the Kodiak Bears.
I think anytime you are in the woods you need to “watch six” but especially when calling game in. You could be attracting some “unwanted attention”. Sort of like putting a teenager in a blue dress on a WJC rope line.
2nd post, 1st reply, well played.
Did it have bad breath?
Years ago there was a wrestling bear with a muzzle and some say drugged.
A large co worker had a go with the beast!
He said the breath was so bad, you did not want to get close!
I drive by that one every day on the way home; I swear sometimes it moves its head and looks at me. :0)
