First elk sighting in SC in nearly 300 years, biologists say
wyff4 ^ | 26 Oct 2016 | Ron Barnett

Wactor said the young bull elk might return to North Carolina if there are no females where it is in Pickens County.

Biologist said elk were eliminated from the southern Appalachian Mountains in the late 1700s due to over-hunting and loss of habitat. They said the species neared extinction across North American by 1900.

...it is pretty cool see the mountain elk come home after 300 years missing in action.”

That lone bull Elk won’t stay long in Slim Pickens County without some hootchie-mama elk.

A few weeks ago, I was on a highway driving through Central PA, just past the Allegheny - saw a HUGE elk just standing by the side of the road, eating some grass. Very impressive.

My wife is so relieved that "her" Bambi has shown up in South Carolina and he's OK, but tell him to come home; he's missed here in North Carolina.

Back when I was doing a lot of bow hunting I read an article about a guide who took folks out for money to places like Montana and Saskatchewan but for his PERSONAL hunting and trophies he hunted New Jersey. Literally, back yards. He wrote homeowners would be happy to give him permission. His point was effort per pound of meat New Jersey was the best hunting in the US.

Elk outstanding on the highway are a deadly threat, especially at night or foggy conditions.

This is not true. They have been spotted in places like this in South Carolina for ages.

A new day is dawning. Even nearly extinct indigenous animals know it and are reemerging after 300 years of hiding.

William Byrd, probably.

He extensively explored and mapped around here: VA/NC.

I find it passing strange that “LOSS OF Habitat” is given as a reason for their demise. There’s a whole lot less habitat now than then...one would think.

That bull took a pretty good hike if he showed up in SC...

Was that you or one of your relatives? You should swing over when you’re in our region.

Charelston, SC, was one of the largest cities in North America when the last recorded sighting of a SC elk happened in 1737.

A cougar has been captured on several trail cams in Middle Tennessee. So far no live sightings.

Wonder if this elk is an escapee from someones private elk raising operation. It also wouldn’t surprise me if either the gang-greens or some wealthy hunters have plans to covertly release farm raised elk in an attempt start a ‘wild’ population there.
