Any Subaru or a Mazda CX of your choice with AWD.
These have pretty decent mileage numbers, are comfortable, and all wheel drive.

What a hoot! I would love it, but my driveway would eat it up. I need something rugged butch. I suspect that the Golf is more at risk form your driveway than a '73 Duster would be. However, if more ground clearance and all-wheel drive are high on your list, go test-drive a Subaru Outback.
