I have a 2013 Golf TDI Diesel that I have a strong option to give back to Volkswagen.
I have been waiting for the election because I have a feeling that Clinton will continue the leftist policies of crawling up gas prices.
However, I have been looking for a car, just in case. My goodness!
Everything out there is chock full of electronics that will make them obsolete soon.
Everything out there looks like a shiny, overgrown bug.
I think I need something a bit more more butch-looking.
I look longingly at jeep wranglers, but I am told that they are unreliable and break big things like transmissions.
I probably should have four wheel or all wheel drive. Because I live on the snow belt, at the end of a half mile drive way. Although the golf did navigate well.
I have looked at the so called SUVs, and they are just cars, none have a truck frame or the ruggedness I had with my old 90's SUVs.
Is there a vehicle out there that is moderately comfortable, good mileage, little to no electronics, and durable?
Not something that I am expected to work on, because aside from playing with the distributor cap on my old MGB, I try to stay out of from under the hood. I just found out there are no more distributor caps. Shocking!
What is a chickensoup to do?
No, the “Thing” is the one that floats.
The gas mileage was actually not that great with those, 20’s highway.
Oh, and buy used.
Is vw or the guvmint making you turn it in? I have always thought that vw diesels are very tough. vehicles today last twice as long as 30 years ago. people are regularly getting 300k out of cars with proper upkeep. Just wondering about the turn in.

Yes.
The government made Volkswagen provide an offer that would be difficult to refuse. Why?
1. My model has the Takada airbags that they are NOT repairing
2. This government drama dropped my car value from 18K to 8K instead of the 22K they are offering, if I am in an accident I am underwater on my loan. And my insurance only pays on car value, not car worth to Volkswagen.
3.I have not been overwhelmed with German engineering. Actually I think my Mazdas and Saabs have had much better design.
4. They are expensive to fix, particularly if they are worthless.

There is, it's called ICON. Better than new, retrofitted with whatever new tech you want, fully refurbished from the ground up. They've sold so many rest-mod Broncos that they're starting to have a hard time finding good candidates, they don't want to mod pristine survivors. But, you'll pay and pay dearly for anything from ICON.
My story is pretty much the same.
Good on gas and rumor has it that it will float in case you live in a flood zone... ;)

Oh, and the handling in the snow should be pretty good - its a front-drive car, and with the weight of the engine on those wheels, it isn’t bad in lousy weather.

find it, buy it, live it

Yeah, that got me my Nissan Xterra, Not a great vehicle.
keep your TDI until it hits 375,000
I love my 2015 TDI beetle
But in California, I’m pretty sure they won’t let me re register it. Oh, sure, with a ‘fix’ that hurts mileage, performance and reliability....
Shame, excellent car.

No, I don’t work for GM. I just love my car as a great performer for the value.
I post you this from Lander’s Dodge Jeep service department waiting for my 2007 Wrangler to come crawling out of the garage. Had an airbag recall rectified, and scheduled service done on the front, and rear differentials, and the transfer case.
142,000 miles, zero troubles.
My wife liked mine enough for me to get her one, also.
128,000 miles, zero troubles.
You can bet that my next vehicle will be a Jeep Wrangler.

Or maybe you could find a Lada?
For 4 wheel drive, you might want to look at Subaru. (But decline the optional rainbow sticker). But they are going to be loaded with EMP sensitive electronics like all modern western cars.
I understand now. makes sense to move it then. I wouldn’t buy a mazda. last one broke me. it’s all Toyotas and Hondas now around my house.
consumer reports rates all the Nissans very badly.
Did look at Subarus, and survived still having the urge to shave my legs.
They all are shiny and girly. Looks like they are made from tinfoil. Only not so sturdy.
I liked the old Subs that had a color on the top and the grey protective panels on the bottom.
Maybe they've gotten better, but I wouldn't look at one. I rented one a few years ago, and it had a small defroster centered on the windshield - no defrost in front of the driver. Which would have been OK, but I had to drive through an icestorm. I had to drive leaning over the center console to try to spot the edges of the roadway through the small clear area in the center of the windshield.
Not back when I bought the Xterra. It was up and coming great vehicle or something to that effect.
