His family name is Velline. Bobby Vee was short for Bobby Velline.
Interesting choice of a stage name. Sort of like Murray Kaufmann the DJ was “Murray the K”.

Now I can’t this stupid song out of my head after decades of trying. This is one signer’s album my mom played over and over and over until an “accident happened” one bright sunny day and the vinyl album lay in several pieces at the base of a cement wall.
