Hilarious. I’m still laughing.
As a kid I did in the 60’s that a lot with diesel 18 wheelers. It was very common for them to honk the horn for kids, we loved it. I’ve heard ships before, they’re a lot louder...
I gotta go watch that again...

Oh, that is a reaction I have seen many times. Many of the locks and dams on the Upper Mississippi have a nice observation area for people to watch the tows lock through, and some of them are fairly close to the horns that the lock blows when boats enter/leave. The horn types vary, but the lock closest to us has a relatively powerful pair of horns that scare the H out of people who aren't expecting it.
But the real treat is when one of the larger line boat pilots deigns to give the gawkers a quick, full blast of the Kahlenbergs; if anyone was hoping to hear some noise, an obliging pilot with a -3 or -4 series horn on the roof will oblige them with interest. The kids might cry and/or flee to the grownups, the grownups might jump or flinch (or curse… "grownups" vary in quality). It probably gives everyone something to discuss on the drive back home.
And yes, some of the crew do chuckle when people visibly react to getting more decibels than they bargained for.
