The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
As I have been trying to learn to garden in pots more this year I’ve ended up with a bumper crop of peppers. Still getting loads of them but they are now so cross pollinated that all except 2 plants look like multi-pepper type decorations. Green, yellow, red and black all mixed up. The only 2 pots staying true are singled out on a different part of the property. Most of my pots are arranged around an area I can get into and maneuver with my walker so they’re close neighbors to each other.
I haven’t yet counted the jars and bags of peppers I’ve dehydrated this year. Waiting for winter to oven can them. (Yeah, I know the USDA says thats a no-no, but it works for me)
Thanks FRiend. It was special. Today outside chores!
Yup , all are well balanced fretilizers, ideal for garden plantings.
You may have to use less on the garden since its' combined nutrients will be N20-P20-K20, so use less in quantity, or use only half as much as you usually would.
Fine for the garden , but even cut back in quantity; I don't suggest using it around fruit or nut trees since it would encourage excessive foliage and weak limb growth.
When a green or red pepper has brown patches on it, it is called "corking"
It is nauture's way of telling you that it is already fully ripe.
When I first grew peppers and they had brown splotches on them, I thought they had gotten sunburned.
These were grown from the seeds of other peppers. First time I ever saw a brown one!
This little guy is totally-brown. He’s small - about a 1.5 to 2 inches across - but consistent in brown color all around.
Last one I picked that size (purple) seemed to have immature seeds - so I wondered if I should keep waiting on him.
Is the plant supposed to produce purple pepper fruits, or green, or brown fruit ?
Is it an Heirloom plant ?
Because, if it is an heirloom plant that you intend to save the seed for replanting next spring,
I would wait the harvest, and protect it from squirrels, etc.
And if its an heirloom, I would research pepper seed preservation so I would be prepared.
It came from store-bought - which store I’m not sure - these are “extra” plants - about 60 but they’re way too close together.
One the odd chance it’s blossom end-rot in a different form, I’m about to go add more calcium in plant food form - I have been putting eggshells in everything for months after one tomato was black on the bottom. Never happened again with the tomatoes.
The multi-color seed package is producing the green, green-yellow and purple peppers. There are supposed to be orange and yellow in there. Not yet and too late it appears.
Consider a cloche, a covering of glass or plastic to keep the heat in
I have used plastic milk bottles with the bottoms cut out when desperate (sorta like a mini-greehouse);
the only limitation is they need to be removed when the sun comes out, or plants will dry out from daytime sun.
With a cold frame, the larger the better, there is more forgiveness...
I am hoping to bring some of them inside - they should have peppers in a couple of months or so (close to mature peppers). Especially being warmer inside. But I’m watching the weather week-to-week. Might get a few more weeks above freezing. It’s close. Hoping for 4, might be 2-3.
We’ll see.
That sounds AWESOME I’m going to have to try it! Thanks for the well wishes.
Add chopped garlic, a little cooking oil on the bottom of the pan, slice some green onions...there are abundant ways to consume poppers.
BTW:
I cut the bacon in half. Goes father that way. Skip toothpicks.
It seems like it here too.
Me too - too fast and seems to go faster every year. Thanks for the pics.
Its’ hard to balance the feet in a position that’s comfortable, but have had some success heating a towel and rice sock in the micro wave. Put the heated sock so that my heel are resting comfortable covered with a toasty towel and throw the heating pad over that. Works for a while.
Feet aren’t really cold though. It’s either electrolytes or neuropathy, so sometimes the warmth doesn’t really help.
Question: Ive got some bags of fertilizer with same ratios (6-6-6, 10-10-10, 4-4-4). Okay to mix?

I will defer to TIK-I can’t think of any reason why not.
Wash the green one in warm water, let it dry, and then wrap it in newspaper, or paper towel. Should ripen up.
That’s what I am doing too. Watching the weather reports.
