I am interested in what the passenger has to say.

The "passenger" was the instructor, and technically the pilot-in-command.

Jonathan Rucker said he was sitting at a picnic table behind a house on Colt Street when he heard the airplane suddenly go silent.

"I hear planes every day," he said. "I heard a plane, then I didn't hear anything. I looked up and the plane was just tipping over. It tipped to the left and dropped straight down. There was a loud bang, smoke and flame. It tipped to the left and just dropped like a rock."

If the report is accurate, it sounds like the engines quit or he stalled. I can't think of a reason why you'd cut the engines if you were going to crash intentionally.

The instructing pilot, who is awake in hospital and speaking with police but has not been named, said that his student Freitekh had crashed the plane on purpose, law enforcement sources told the Times.

Yes, there are a few things that don't add up.

When I posted my response, I had missed that the instructor actually made that claim. I asked the moderator to delete it, but it hasn't happened yet.

I have a bad feeling about what actually happened, but I'm going to hold my comments until more facts are in.

As a pilot myself its possible to overcome the pilot in command if and only if you are the stronger of the two, the controls on that plane are simply mechanical, same controls left and right sides. I would say the instructor fought like hell, may have seen the intended target and did other countermeasures like shutting off the magnetos, fuel or setting full flaps and crossing the pedals. A hero no doubt!
