In a war that never happened, formations of heavy and rather odd-looking Soviet tanks would have powered through atomic explosions in breakthrough attacks into West Germany. Enter the Object 279 tank, a curious oddity from the late 1950s which was obsolete despite its design principles deliberately reflecting the fear of a nuclear battlefield by the time it was produced. It was certainly not a success, as the Soviet Union only manufactured a handful of prototypes.

Well, it is an unusual design - I’ll give it that much.
Oh, man, I can’t even imagine how the crew could repair one of those inside tracks.
Not much protection for the tracks.
Nope, but you can still squish mutants and zombies. ;-)
Looks like it’s got hand-holds on the side of the hull and rear of the turret for the desantniki.
Looks like a stealth tank with those chines.
OK I’m in!
UFO with a gun.

Anyone here playing World of Tanks / Blitz?

“formations of heavy and rather odd-looking Soviet tanks would have powered through atomic explosions”
Ridiculous. People who state such things have NO CONCEPT of basic physics, let alone what nukes do.
What a joke.
Battlefield nuclear blast zone is “only” 2-3 miles across. Hills, intervening terrain? Then you might survive in even an armored car at 1-1/2 miles. A few minutes after the flash and blast effect, drive through the blast area itself. A short time in the cratered area even is survivable despite the radiation. (Especially if an air blast.)) Ground or underground blast is far dirtier. Close the hatch, get through in ten minutes.
A day later? Easy.
Duck-and-cover. ;)
Obj 279 Designer: “Three small problems Comrade Khrushchev:
1. Kinetic energy from blast kills heroic crew members inside turret.
2. Outside radiation means heroic crew can never leave tank.
3. Once track(s) thrown, crew cannot fix unless dismounted...see #2”.
Comrade Khrushchev: “Comrade Tank Designer...off to the Gulag with you.” “Make a note to self...order more ‘Hero of Soviet Union’ medals for tankisti...”
